<strong>The</strong> unique style of each notary is significant. Even more important is <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure of his<br />
clientele: <strong>the</strong>ir social st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>and</strong> wealth as well as <strong>the</strong> areas of Genoa in which <strong>the</strong>y lived. <strong>The</strong><br />
n<strong>at</strong>ure of contracts corresponded also to seasons, for example, a cartulary from <strong>the</strong> winter is less<br />
likely to contain many commercial contracts to <strong>the</strong> eastern Mediterranean, since <strong>the</strong> nearest<br />
sailing time was not until <strong>the</strong> spring. 3 Domestic contracts <strong>and</strong> travel to short distance destin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
along <strong>the</strong> Liguria or to <strong>the</strong> French Riviera are, <strong>the</strong>refore, more likely to appear in <strong>the</strong> cartularies <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> beginning of each year. In March <strong>and</strong> April merchants signed contracts to <strong>the</strong> western<br />
Mediterranean. For example, <strong>the</strong> cartulary of Lanfranco from <strong>the</strong> winter of 1203 is poor in respect<br />
of intern<strong>at</strong>ional commerce: out of 501 documents only 77 are travelling records, more than half of<br />
which are to <strong>the</strong> North African ports of Ceuta or Bougie. <strong>The</strong>re are hardly any records concerning<br />
ventures to <strong>the</strong> eastern Mediterranean. In fact, <strong>the</strong> vast majority of <strong>the</strong> contracts <strong>at</strong>tributed to <strong>the</strong><br />
