EMOTIONS BY THE SEA
Paradiso Gulf and its deep blue waters
Bogliasco Pieve Ligure
To the east of Genoa, past Nervi, appears
the Paradiso Gulf. Here, from the sea and
skyline to the steep hilltops, one is
plunged into a breathtaking sea of blues
and greens. Its villages - Bogliasco, Pieve
Ligure, Sori and Recco - are lined up along
the winding Aurelia Road that runs along
the coastline, passing through
extraordinarily beautiful views of Camogli
and the promontory of Mount Portofino.
Its mild microclimate means that sunny
days and warm temperatures may be
encountered even in the winter, favouring
the early blossoming of its gardens and
coastal vegetation over hanging the cliffs.
Aromas change, becoming more intense.
The prevailing scents of lemon, orange
blossom, mimosa, pittosporum and
gardenia, especially in springtime, blend
together with the scents of the thousands
of flowers which brightly colour the parks
of the villas on the sea cliffs.
Bogliasco, on the waves of the Libeccio,
is a quaint seaside village made up of
charming small beaches interspersed
amongst high rocky shores. From its little
quay flows the Poggio stream, complete
with stone bridge, constructed in the
Roman era and rebuilt in the Middle Ages.
Here fishermen land with their gozzi
(typical local fishing boats) at the end of a
day's fishing. Surfers and windsurfers
brave the long, broad waves whipped up
by the Libeccio (the name of the south -
westerly wind).
Pieve Ligure: the Sea Trades. Above the
steep coastline interspersed by lonely
inlets of crystal clear waters, stands Pieve
Alta, an old village, surrounded by
hundred year old olive trees, carob trees,
cypresses and pines. In the hamlet of La
Piccola, near the railway station, the
warehouse that once belonged to the
railroad company is now the headquarters
of Storie di Barche, (Boat Stories), a
cultural organization which works to
preserve the memory of the sea trades. It
organizes cultural and educational
activities and keeps a large archive of
documents, books, articles, drawings, tools
and information on the arts of the
shipwrights, sail makers and rope makers,
