The Porto Antico,The Historic Port, nestled
between the old town with its caruggi (very
narrow historical streets) and overpass, was
radically renovated by the famous architect
Renzo Piano in 1992 in celebration of the 500th
anniversary of the discovery of America. The
massive fortification of Porta Siberia is home to
the Luzzati Museum, dedicated to the great
Genoese artist. The Cotton Warehouses have
been converted to host a variety of commercial
and recreational venues; including multi
auditorium cinemas, bars, restaurants, a mall,
Città dei Bambini, a playground and educational
centre for children, as well as the Children's
Library “De Amicis”. The gigantic Bigo, a
panoramic elevator emulating a ship crane,
offers a breathtaking 40 metre high view of the
Historic Port. Opposite there is the Piazza delle
Feste, (Square of Festivals) a tensile structure
hosting a skating rink which opens in the winter
months. The Museum of the Antarctic "Felice
Ippolito" is an exhibition centre measuring
1,000 square metres and is located in the edifice
Palazzina Millo. Here geographical maps, very
sophisticated scientific tools, a submarine robot
for underwater filming and survival equipment
for Antarctic environments are on display. When
visiting Genoa, tourists must not miss the
Aquarium located on the nearby bridge Ponte
Spinola. Resembling a ship about to set sail this
modular structure complete with portholes was
designed by the Baltimore architect Peter
Chermayeff. Through its crystal doors visitors enter
the enchanted world of Captain Nemo: they can go
on a virtual diving tour exploring the great sea
abysses and oceans and listen to the recorded
sounds of the waves and seagulls. Volume levels are
regulated by a computer according to the number
of visitors flocking to the aquarium. For land lovers,
there is the Biosphere, a building of glass and steel
designed by Renzo Piano hosting rain forest plants
and exotic butterflies. The ancient arsenals of
Genoa, (also known as La Superba or the “The
Superb”, due to its glorious past) have been
converted into the glittering crystal and steel Galata
Museum of the Sea. Its four floors and 23 halls are
home to permanent exhibitions and theme
sections, which tell the story of mankind's
adventurous journey through and across time and
sea. The Saletta dell’Arte (Hall of Art) hosts
temporary exhibitions and the evocative Sala della
Tempesta (Hall of the Tempest) on the second floor
