The Antola Refuge
artificial lake, created during a period of heavy
rain between 1924 and 1930. The course of the
Rio Noci was interrupted by a large dam (56m).
The banks of the lake, home to fish and turtle,
touch the chestnuts, alder and hornbeam forests.
Lake Busalletta, between Busalla and Ronco
Scrivia, is another artificial lake, constructed
between 1970 and 1977, for the Nicolay
Aqueduct, again created to provide water to “La
Superba”; 50 m deep, it also makes an impressive
scenic element, its high steep banks are
surrounded by dense chestnut forests. Amongst
the Polcevera Valley in the east, the Piani di Praglia
to the south and the high plains of Capanne di
Marcarolo in the west, there are the three Laghi
of Gorzente, that form part of the artificial basin
of the water reserve of the De Ferrari-Galliera
Acqueduct, a company founded in 1880 to satisfy
the city's water needs. In that year, the artificial
basin of Lake Bruno or Lavezze Lake was
completed, in1884, that of Lungo Lake, and in
1906, the Badana Lake. The Gorzente river also
forms pleasant watery mirrors amongst the
woods of black pines and shrubs of heather,
edged in tiny sand and pebble beaches where
one can go swimming in the summer.
The Antola Park
The Antola Park is an environmental
treasure trove. Situated in Villa Borzino
at Busalla (www.parcoantola.it), it
encloses and protects an area of
inestimable environmental value,
including the northern part of the Valle
Trebbia and Valle Scrivia , 4,837 hectares
overlooked by Mount Antola (1597m). A
must for all climbing and trekking
enthusiasts, there are many walking
tracks to choose from (270 km), some
forming circuits: the Pentema Circuit,
with its nativity scene, Caprile Circuit,
which through highlands and woods
climbs up to Mount Antola. The Chiappa
Circuit with its glimpses of the Brevenna
Valley and the slopes of Mount Antola;
the Torriglia Circuit which winds along
the high basin of the Scrivia River. Every
now and again, through the chestnut
forests, pastures, rivers and lakes
glimpses of ancient rural traditions
appear (stone and wooden houses, mills,
haystacks, castles,) hamlets, churches
and sanctuaries.
