Parks in nature’s green
Many villas highlight the opulent lifestyles, power and wealth of the great Patrizian
families and enterprising Genoese who constructed them over the centuries from
the 1400's. There are also magnificent Natural Parks, some of which descend right
down to the sea, whilst others climb the valleys of the region right up to the peaks
of the Apennines. “La Superba” becomes “La Divina”, (the divine) during EuroFlora,
an expo which is organized every five years as part of the Genoa Fair, and which fills
the entire city with flowers from all over the globe. More than 500 thousand visitors
came to the last EuroFlora, held in 2006, whilst the next, a must for all green fingers,
will be held from the 22nd April, to the 1st May in 2011.
The Scent of Far
Away Lands.
At the highest point of the
Montegalletto bastion,
built in the 1500's, there is
the D’Albertis Castle,
overlooking the sea. The
neogothic building was
commissioned by Captain
Enrico Alberto D’Albertis,
explorer and
anthropologist. Building
began in 1886 and was
completed in 1892, with
the supervision of Alfredo
D’Andrade. Today it is
surrounded by a park, and
hosts Museum of world
cultures.
