Stories of water, Villas and<br />
Parks <strong>in</strong> nature’s green<br />
Many villas highlight the opulent lifestyles, power and wealth of the great Patrizian<br />
families and enterpris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Genoese</strong> who constructed them over the centuries from<br />
the 1400's. There are also magnificent Natural Parks, some of which descend right<br />
down to the sea, whilst others climb the valleys of the region right up to the peaks<br />
of the Apenn<strong>in</strong>es. “La Superba” becomes “La Div<strong>in</strong>a”, (the <strong>di</strong>v<strong>in</strong>e) dur<strong>in</strong>g EuroFlora,<br />
an expo which is organized every five years as part of the Genoa Fair, and which fills<br />
the entire city with flowers from all over the globe. More than 500 thousand visitors<br />
came to the last EuroFlora, held <strong>in</strong> 2006, whilst the next, a must for all green f<strong>in</strong>gers,<br />
will be held from the 22nd April, to the 1st May <strong>in</strong> 2011.<br />
The Scent of Far<br />
Away Lands.<br />
At the highest po<strong>in</strong>t of the<br />
Montegalletto bastion,<br />
built <strong>in</strong> the 1500's, there is<br />
the D’Albertis Castle,<br />
overlook<strong>in</strong>g the sea. The<br />
neogothic build<strong>in</strong>g was<br />
commissioned by Capta<strong>in</strong><br />
Enrico Alberto D’Albertis,<br />
explorer and<br />
anthropologist. Build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
began <strong>in</strong> 1886 and was<br />
completed <strong>in</strong> 1892, with<br />
the supervision of Alfredo<br />
D’Andrade. Today it is<br />
surrounded by a park, and<br />
hosts Museum of world<br />
cultures.<br />
