Water Polo, trekking and Whales
Submerged in an expanse of water with the
mountains pressing their backs, it seems only
natural that the supreme sporting choice for
Ligurians be water polo. In Liguria and all over
the Genoa Region, a swimming pool is not a
swimming pool if its not fitted with two goal
posts at either end! The reigning champions of
the sport, hitherto undefeated, are from Recco,
whose team, the Pro Recco, represents both the
history and the future of this sport. But water
polo is attractive also because one can play
anywhere and the sea is available to all.
Swimming and water polo venues are well
distributed throughout the region, so that it is
never too difficult to find a swimming pool
available for a lovely swim. This is so also
because water polo is popular not only in
Recco, but also in Bogliasco, Sori, Pieve Ligure,
Nervi, in short, all over the region. There remain
plenty of places for those who would prefer to
appreciate the sea in peace and quiet, far from
the ubiquitous water polo balls. For those who
prefer fresh water sports, there is the village of
Savignone in the Scrivia Valley which has
kayaking and rafting points set up on the
Scrivia River, so that rowers can delight in the
watery helter skelters provided by nature. Another
wondrous water pass time is whale watching.
Excursions leave from the Historic Port regularly,
for the Ligurian Sea is a sanctuary for the
cetaceans. Don't miss the chance of seeing them
as thrilling and moving encounters with whales
and dolphins are the order of the day. Not only are
the sporting possibilities offered by Genoa and
surrounding regions water based, but, for example
one can also set off from Pieve Ligure on an
enchanting and pleasant scenic drive to Mount
Santa Croce. And for those who love trekking in all
its forms: on foot, by bike, on horseback, the
Genoese area offers a plethora of opportunities.
"Where are they?" you may ask. Setting off from
the Ceranesi in the Polcevera Valley, one can go on
a trip to the Gorzente Lakes, by the the Lakes path,
and there is also the Pian Lupino track. At
Sant'Olcese, apart from making a gastronomic
visit, one can also walk the very interesting nature
trail of Ciaè, along which one may admire a variety
of endemic Ligurian species. But the attractions of
the area do not end there, bearing in mind that
the scenery of the Polcevera Valley also acts as a
splendid backdrop for one of the classic
international cycling races: The Apennine Circuit
