ScriviaValley: amongst villas and noble edifices.
Bordering with the Scrivia River and the Antola Park,
the Scrivia valley embraces two castles, remnants of
the past glories of the two powerful, often feuding
noble families: the Spinola and the Fieschi.There are
also fin de siècle art nouveau buildings, such as Villa
Borzino at Busalla (1936).The Parish Church of San
Giorgio Martire boasts valuable paintings. In the
nearby Borgo Fornari, there is the Villa Davidson, of
Gino Coppedé , surrounded by an immense park.
The most magnificent bridge of the valley, built in
the fifteenth century, is to be found a short distance
from the San Martino Parish Church (1641) of Ronco
Scrivia. Bastia is a village named after the
conglomerate fortification that rises up opposite the
Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bastia. Legend has it
that, in the early 1600's, the statue of the HolyVirgin,
now to be admired in the tympanum of the
sanctuary's facade, was first discovered in a crevice.
The village of Isola del Cantone is to be found
amongst wooded hills. Its name comes from the
union of two hamlets: Isola, which comprises the
city centre on the left of the Scrivia River, and
Cantone, on its right bank, dominated by two
castles; former Spinola family holdings. At
Pietrabissara we find still another Spinola residence.
In 1648 Marquis Luciano commissioned the building of
Palazzo Spinola, replacing the former castle, the ruins of
which tower above the local dwellings. VobbiaValley opens
up to the east of Isola del Cantone. Just past a treacherous
gully the Stone Castle (XIIIth century) rises up against the
skyline, wedged in between two spurs. After Vobbia, you
can descend down to Crocefieschi, a stronghold of the
Fieschi family, whose dominion over the area began in
1253.Their twin buildings are to be found in Piazza IV
Novembre. At Savignone the typical carruggi lead to the
square that two historical edifices look onto; they are: the
baroque San Pietro Church (1691) and the Palazzo dei Fieschi
(XVIth cent.), converted into a high class hotel in 1856. A
history of the alpine troops is to be found in the National
Museum of the Alpine Soldiers, whilst the archaeological
section of the Museum of the ScriviaValley recounts the
history of the area. On passing Casella, terminus of the
Genoa/Casella railway (see the box, pag. 17), one arrives at
Montoggio, the ruins of the Fieschi Castle and the Parish
Church of San Giovanni Decollato are rendered even more
valuable by the Domenico Fiasella and Orazio De Ferrari
paintings found inside the church. A little further on, in the
direction of Creto, in the Sanctuary of theTre Fontane
(XVIIIth cent.), there is the Museum of votive offerings. InTre
