display. Between Principe Railway Station andVia
Gramsci stands the Commenda of San Giovanni di
Pré, which was commissioned by the Knights of
Malta in 1180 to serve as an “ospitale”(a hospice) for
pilgrims and the poor. Opposite the Maritime Station
stands another jewel of “La Superba”: Palazzo di
Fassolo, also called Palazzo del Principe (the Palace of
the Prince), built in 1530 by Admiral Andrea Doria,
leader of the famous battle of Lepanto. Further on is
the Lanterna, a 77-metre-high lighthouse built on a
rock spur 40 metres high, its 117 metres looms over
the sea and its port.The Lanterna has been guiding
vessels into the harbour since the XIIth century.
Above Corvetto Square, in the park filled with exotic
trees ofVilletta Di Negro is, the Museum of Oriental
Art “Edoardo Chiossone”featuring a Japanese
section.Visitors to the exhibition will be astounded
to see its 1,000 priceless exhibits apparently floating
in thin air, an optical effect created as incoming light
filters through the large glass panels and sliding
screens of the museum.The Cemetery of Staglieno,
in BisagnoValley, is an open-air museum with
majestic funerary monuments, including the graves
of great historical figures such as: Giuseppe Mazzini,
Ferruccio Parri and Fabrizio De André.
The legend of the
Holy Grail
According to the legend, the Sacred
Goblet or the mythical Holy Grail was
sculpted out of a large emerald which
dropped from Lucifer's forehead when
he fell from God's Grace. It is kept in
the Museo del Tesoro (Museum of
Treasures) in the Cathedral of San
Lorenzo. The legend narrates that the
goblet was donated by the Queen of
Saba to Solomon, and was used by
Jesus during the Rite of the Last
Supper. The same chalice was used by
Joseph of Arimathea during the
crucifixion of Christ to contain the
sacred fluid bled from his side.
Brought in to Genoa by Guglielmo
Embriaco as a trophy of the Crusades,
in the XIIth century, it was later stolen
by the Napoleonic troops in 1806.
Genoa retrieved the chalice in pieces,
ten years later.
