<strong>di</strong>splay. Between Pr<strong>in</strong>cipe Railway Station andVia<br />

Gramsci stands the Commenda of San Giovanni <strong>di</strong><br />

Pré, which was commissioned by the Knights of<br />

Malta <strong>in</strong> 1180 to serve as an “ospitale”(a hospice) for<br />

pilgrims and the poor. Opposite the Maritime Station<br />

stands another jewel of “La Superba”: Palazzo <strong>di</strong><br />

Fassolo, also called Palazzo del Pr<strong>in</strong>cipe (the Palace of<br />

the Pr<strong>in</strong>ce), built <strong>in</strong> 1530 by Admiral Andrea Doria,<br />

leader of the famous battle of Lepanto. Further on is<br />

the Lanterna, a 77-metre-high lighthouse built on a<br />

rock spur 40 metres high, its 117 metres looms over<br />

the sea and its port.The Lanterna has been guid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

vessels <strong>in</strong>to the harbour s<strong>in</strong>ce the XIIth century.<br />

Above Corvetto Square, <strong>in</strong> the park filled with exotic<br />

trees ofVilletta Di Negro is, the Museum of Oriental<br />

Art “Edoardo Chiossone”featur<strong>in</strong>g a Japanese<br />

section.Visitors to the exhibition will be astounded<br />

to see its 1,000 priceless exhibits apparently float<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong> air, an optical effect created as <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g light<br />

filters through the large glass panels and slid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

screens of the museum.The Cemetery of Staglieno,<br />

<strong>in</strong> BisagnoValley, is an open-air museum with<br />

majestic funerary monuments, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the graves<br />

of great historical figures such as: Giuseppe Mazz<strong>in</strong>i,<br />

Ferruccio Parri and Fabrizio De André.<br />

The legend of the<br />

Holy Grail<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the legend, the Sacred<br />

Goblet or the mythical Holy Grail was<br />

sculpted out of a large emerald which<br />

dropped from Lucifer's forehead when<br />

he fell from God's Grace. It is kept <strong>in</strong><br />

the Museo del Tesoro (Museum of<br />

Treasures) <strong>in</strong> the Cathedral of San<br />

Lorenzo. The legend narrates that the<br />

goblet was donated by the Queen of<br />

Saba to Solomon, and was used by<br />

Jesus dur<strong>in</strong>g the Rite of the Last<br />

Supper. The same chalice was used by<br />

Joseph of Arimathea dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

crucifixion of Christ to conta<strong>in</strong> the<br />

sacred fluid bled from his side.<br />

Brought <strong>in</strong> to Genoa by Guglielmo<br />

Embriaco as a trophy of the Crusades,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the XIIth century, it was later stolen<br />

by the Napoleonic troops <strong>in</strong> 1806.<br />

Genoa retrieved the chalice <strong>in</strong> pieces,<br />

ten years later.<br />
