Its historic centre, which is the largest in Europe
and the richest in monuments, artworks and
architectural pieces of great historical value, is
now working to restore all its former splendour.
Wandering through its tangle of narrow, medieval
alleys (caruggi) visitors can 'read' the town's
history 'written' in its architectural marvels.
Aediculae, flying buttresses, lunettes, loggias,
medieval and XV century buildings are common
features of this city. From the museum of
Sant’Agostino, an ex monastic complex featuring
the funerary monument of Margherita di
Bramante and Santa Maria di Castello, a religious
complex including a Romanesque church and
convent overlooking the cloister, to the further
down,Via San Lorenzo, with the Cathedral of San
Lorenzo one is captured by the city’s architectural
wealth.The interior of the Cathedral, decorated
with polychromatic marbles and tall columns,
most of them smuggled out from
Constantinople, hosts the ashes of John the
Baptist, brought into the town by the Genoese
returning from the First Crusade (1098).The
medieval Church of SanMatteo, is situated in the
homonymous square, surrounded by noble
palaces and displaying stern facades made up of
longitudinal black and white stripes, of white marble and
black slate. On the 13th July 2006, 46 of the 163 Palazzi
dei Rolli (Rolli palaces) were declared part of the Unesco
World Heritage (www.irolli.it).They are Renaissance and
Baroque residences commissioned by the aristocratic
families of the Genoese Republic on the Strade Nuove,
opened in the XVIth century. On occasion of a state visit,
one of these noble residences would win the honour of
hosting the visitors, the name having been drawn from
an official list called Rolli containing the names of all
those registered. Located inVia Garibaldi, the ancient
Strada Aurea, are the marvellous facades of some of
these sumptuous abodes that, in the past, seduced
Rubens and the travellers of the GrandTour. In particular
it’s worth pointing out Tursi Palace, now theTown Hall,
Palazzo Rosso (Red Palace) and Palazzo Bianco (White
Palace), now prestigious art galleries. BehindVia
Garibaldi, in the square which takes his name stands
Palazzo Pellicceria, a rare example of an XVIIIth century
well preserved noble residence, now hosting a museum.
With its façade decorated in rococo stuccos, it boasts a
rich collection of paintings by Rubens,Van Dick, Antonello
da Messina and Magnasco. Fabrizio de Andrè, the
