Its historic centre, which is the largest <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

and the richest <strong>in</strong> monuments, artworks and<br />

architectural pieces of great historical value, is<br />

now work<strong>in</strong>g to restore all its former splendour.<br />

Wander<strong>in</strong>g through its tangle of narrow, me<strong>di</strong>eval<br />

alleys (caruggi) visitors can 'read' the town's<br />

history 'written' <strong>in</strong> its architectural marvels.<br />

Ae<strong>di</strong>culae, fly<strong>in</strong>g buttresses, lunettes, loggias,<br />

me<strong>di</strong>eval and XV century build<strong>in</strong>gs are common<br />

features of this city. From the museum of<br />

Sant’Agost<strong>in</strong>o, an ex monastic complex featur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the funerary monument of Margherita <strong>di</strong><br />

Bramante and Santa Maria <strong>di</strong> Castello, a religious<br />

complex <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a Romanesque church and<br />

convent overlook<strong>in</strong>g the cloister, to the further<br />

down,Via San Lorenzo, with the Cathedral of San<br />

Lorenzo one is captured by the city’s architectural<br />

wealth.The <strong>in</strong>terior of the Cathedral, decorated<br />

with polychromatic marbles and tall columns,<br />

most of them smuggled out from<br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, hosts the ashes of John the<br />

Baptist, brought <strong>in</strong>to the town by the <strong>Genoese</strong><br />

return<strong>in</strong>g from the First Crusade (1098).The<br />

me<strong>di</strong>eval Church of SanMatteo, is situated <strong>in</strong> the<br />

homonymous square, surrounded by noble<br />

palaces and <strong>di</strong>splay<strong>in</strong>g stern facades made up of<br />

longitud<strong>in</strong>al black and white stripes, of white marble and<br />

black slate. On the 13th July 2006, 46 of the 163 Palazzi<br />

dei Rolli (Rolli palaces) were declared part of the Unesco<br />

World Heritage (www.irolli.it).They are Renaissance and<br />

Baroque residences commissioned by the aristocratic<br />

families of the <strong>Genoese</strong> Republic on the Strade Nuove,<br />

opened <strong>in</strong> the XVIth century. On occasion of a state visit,<br />

one of these noble residences would w<strong>in</strong> the honour of<br />

host<strong>in</strong>g the visitors, the name hav<strong>in</strong>g been drawn from<br />

an official list called Rolli conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the names of all<br />

those registered. Located <strong>in</strong>Via Garibal<strong>di</strong>, the ancient<br />

Strada Aurea, are the marvellous facades of some of<br />

these sumptuous abodes that, <strong>in</strong> the past, seduced<br />

Rubens and the travellers of the GrandTour. In particular<br />

it’s worth po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out Tursi Palace, now theTown Hall,<br />

Palazzo Rosso (Red Palace) and Palazzo Bianco (White<br />

Palace), now prestigious art galleries. Beh<strong>in</strong>dVia<br />

Garibal<strong>di</strong>, <strong>in</strong> the square which takes his name stands<br />

Palazzo Pellicceria, a rare example of an XVIIIth century<br />

well preserved noble residence, now host<strong>in</strong>g a museum.<br />

With its façade decorated <strong>in</strong> rococo stuccos, it boasts a<br />

rich collection of pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs by Rubens,Van Dick, Antonello<br />

da Mess<strong>in</strong>a and Magnasco. Fabrizio de Andrè, the<br />

famous late <strong>Genoese</strong> songwriter, was a regular toVia del<br />

Campo, where he met the ma<strong>in</strong> character of his song<br />

Bocca <strong>di</strong> Rosa and the late GianniTassio, <strong>in</strong> whose famous
