In <strong>the</strong> 20th century, <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cursive prose, imbued with national<strong>is</strong>m,<br />

continued. Apolinario Mabini’s El verdadero decalogo (The True Decalogue)<br />

was translated into Tagalog as Ang Sampung Aral ni Mabini (The Decalogue <strong>of</strong><br />

Mabini), 1921, by Albino Dimayuga from <strong>the</strong> Span<strong>is</strong>h. Leon Ma. Guerrero<br />

translated La revolucion filipina, con otros documentos de la epoca (The<br />

Philippine Revolution, With O<strong>the</strong>r Documents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Epoch), 1931, also by<br />

Mabini, into Engl<strong>is</strong>h as The Philippine Revolution, 1969. Teodoro M. Kalaw<br />

translated h<strong>is</strong> own memoirs entitled La revolucion filipina, 1924, from Span<strong>is</strong>h<br />

to Engl<strong>is</strong>h as The Philippine Revolution, 1925, which Virgilio S. Almario would<br />

later translate into Filipino as Ang Himagsikang Pilipino, 1989.<br />

During World War II, <strong>the</strong> translation <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cursive prose served to benefit <strong>the</strong><br />

Japanese. Through it, <strong>the</strong> Japanese tried to obtain <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Filipinos<br />

against <strong>the</strong> West. Essays extolling Japanese benevolence and prom<strong>is</strong>ing<br />

independence to <strong>the</strong> Philippines in <strong>the</strong> near future were rendered into <strong>the</strong> local<br />

languages or into Engl<strong>is</strong>h. Examples include Premier Tozjo’s V<strong>is</strong>it Brings <strong>the</strong><br />

Philippines Closer to Independence, 1943, and Peace and Freedom, translated<br />

into Engl<strong>is</strong>h, Filipino, Cebuano, Ilongo, Tagalog, and Bicol. One Nation, One<br />

Heart, One Republic, 1943, by Jose P. Laurel, was likew<strong>is</strong>e translated into<br />

Ilocano, Tagalog, Bicol, Span<strong>is</strong>h, Waray, and Cebuano.<br />

Books translated from <strong>the</strong> Japanese into Engl<strong>is</strong>h and Tagalog were The Flowering<br />

<strong>of</strong> Racial Spirit, 1942, translated by Kazi-o N<strong>is</strong>ina; Kautusang Panloob ng mga<br />

Manggagawa sa Arsenal (Internal Rules for <strong>the</strong> Workers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arsenal), and<br />

Nippon at Bushido (Nippon and Bushido), 1943, translated by General Artemio<br />

Ricarte. A book that helped propagate <strong>the</strong> Japanese language was Mga Salitaan<br />

sa Nippongo Ukol sa mga Pilipino (Conversations in Nippongo For <strong>the</strong><br />

Filipinos) by Swadi Kiyoshi, which featured typical conversations in Japanese for<br />

various occasions, accompanied by <strong>the</strong>ir Tagalog translation.<br />

Newspapers and magazines produced under Japanese superv<strong>is</strong>ion carried<br />

propaganda and, to some extent, Nippongo lessons. Some newspapers were La<br />

Vanguardia, whose contents were mostly Span<strong>is</strong>h translations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> news given<br />

out in <strong>the</strong> Tribune; and Panay Times, also known as Panay Shu-ho, publ<strong>is</strong>hed in<br />

Engl<strong>is</strong>h and Ilongo. Shin Seiki, 1942-44, and Ang Kapitbahay, 1944, are<br />

magazines that featured articles in Engl<strong>is</strong>h and Tagalog.<br />

<strong>Translation</strong>s aimed to uplift <strong>the</strong> political consciousness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Filipinos continued<br />

to be produced in <strong>the</strong> 1970s. Among such works were Edukasyong<br />

Mapagpalaya (A Liberating Education), a chapter from Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oppressed; Mga Talumpati sa Palitang-Kuro sa Yenan Tungkol sa<br />

Panitikan at Sining (Talks at <strong>the</strong> Yenan Forum on Literature and Art) by Mao<br />

Tse Tung; and Ang Teolohiya ng Pagpapalaya (The Theology <strong>of</strong> Liberation) by<br />

Hugo Assman. La Solidaridad, <strong>the</strong> newspaper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reform Movement, was<br />

compiled in a two-volume, bilingual edition (Span<strong>is</strong>h and Engl<strong>is</strong>h) by Guadalupe
