Dumbarton Oaks
Dumbarton Oaks
1921-1947
Washington, DC
Beatrix Farrand designed the Dumbarton Oaks Garden, located in the
Georgetown Section of Washington, DC, between 1921 and 1947 for client Mildred Barnes Bliss.
Dumbarton Oaks is one to the nation’s finest surviving gardens of the Country House Era. The
present garden, consisting of all the original formal spaces and some of the naturalistic portions,
was given to Harvard University in 1941.
In 1941 Beatrix Farrand wrote her Plant Book that outlined her design philosophy
for the gardens and included a detailed plant list for each section of the garden. 1980 the Trustees
for Harvard, Dumbarton Oaks, published Beatrix Farrand’s Plant Book for Dumbarton Oaks, edited
by Diane Kostial McGuire. The following is compiled from that publication.
