In a manuscript folder in the Alabama Department of Archives & <strong>History</strong> in Montgomery, Alabama, lies<br />
Caroline Frances Smith’s “Scrapbook of Pressed Flowers,” compiled between 1830 and 1850. This scrapbook is a<br />
botany lesson where the student was to collect, press and mount a collection of flowers, keying them out in a Botany<br />
textbook, and listing the Latin and common names beside the mounted specimens. They were then dressed up with<br />
a fancy cover and kept in the parlor as reading material for visitors...a forerunner of our coffee table books! The<br />
notebook has a sewn slip-cover of apparently red silk with a half inch, green silk border sewn on. It is now very<br />
faded and deteriorated. Compiled and submitted by George R. Stritikus<br />
