June 30: India-born senior computer scientist Prof
Krishna V. Palem has bagged the prestigious W Wallace
McDowell award for the year 2008 for his pioneering
contribution to the growing field of embedded computing.
The award was announced recently. Prof Krishna Palem
is the chief of the Institute of Sustainable Nanoelectronics
in Nanyang Technology, Singapore.
The Wallace McDowell award is the highest technical
recognition given to individuals who excel in computing
technology and innovation. Past winners of the award
include Intel Corporation co-founder Gordon Moore,
microprocessor inventor Federico Faggin, world wide web
inventor Tim Berners-Lee, Lotus Notes creator and
Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie,
supercomputer pioneers Seymour Cray, Gene Amdahl
and Ken Kennedy, and the architect of IBM’s mainframe computer Frederick Brooks.
“Dr Palem’s contributions are helping to vastly expand the benefits of ubiquitous embedded computing. This
award acknowledges his continued international leadership in information technology,” the citation said. “It is
humbling to be in the company of this group of pioneers. It came as a bolt out of the blue, to be honest. It’s a
pleasing thing, no doubt,” said Krishna Palem.
Recently Dr Palem unveiled plans for the I-slate, an electronic version of the blackboard slates used by many
Indian schoolchildren. It will use a visual-based mathematics curriculum to let children learn by doing. Dr Palem
received his BE degree in ECE from National Institute of Technology, Trichurapalli, in 1979. He obtained his MS
and Ph.D from the University of Texas Austin. He is Professor, Department of Computer Science, Rice
University. He has research grants worth $6.8 million.
