JUNIOr rePOrT Some players would be thrilled to boot one goal in their first game for the season. Some players would love to just get their hands on the footy. Some players would settle to just have a run around the field. But not St Simons’ Mitchell Dennis. He wanted a little more than a kick or two. The young forward, who plays in St Simons’ Under 15D side, booted a whopping 10 goals in his team’s convincing Round 1 victory over Scoresby on Sunday. Dennis tore Liberty Reserve to shreds, booting 10 out of his side’s 19 goals for the day. Amazingly coach Scott Steighaus was not expecting Dennis to run out onto the field. ‘He [Dennis] actually wasn’t supposed to play on Sunday,’ he said. ‘He had a bit of a shoulder injury. ‘But he called me up at the last minute and said he could play. ‘He ended up with something like 10 goals and three behinds.’ Not a bad effort, to say the least. Coach Steighaus, who is filling in for his father Darren who is currently overseas in Vanuatu, is thrilled Dennis is on his team and no one else’s. But at the start of this year he said he wanted to commit to a full year at St Simons.’ Despite kicking 10 goals, Dennis was not even named in the best players. But Steighaus credits Dennis’ big bag of goals to his team’s work in the middle of the ground. ‘We played on Liberty Reserve, which is a really big ground. But our ruckmen and midfielders were dominating the centre clearances, which made it pretty easy for Mitch,’ he said. Despite the convincing victory to start the season, Steighaus says it’s hard to know how far his team can go. ‘We’ve had a couple of lean years, but we started training pretty early in the summer and all the boys have enjoyed it. If we can continue to reproduce what we did on the weekend, hopefully we can become a successful side. Dennis wasn’t the only junior player to reach double-figure goals, with Upper Ferntree Gully’s Carmine Porcaro also having a day out. Porcaro, who plays in the Kings’ Under 14B side, booted 10 of his side’s 17 goals during its win over East Ringwood. In 2012, Hard Yakka will sponsor footballs used in all junior games.
