Support the Lions in 2012. Go Lions! parK orCharDs: A day of firsts as Park Orchards Football Club made its historic debut as a Senior Club in the Eastern Football League, entertaining the South Belgrave and Canterbury Football Clubs. Coach Tony Weeks and the Under 19’s got the club away to a perfect start by defeating South Belgrave then the Development squad (Reserves) followed with a solid win over Canterbury. The seniors did not let the club down either, outlasting a determined and more experienced Canterbury side to win by 13 points. For the record Dave Baldi, Park Orchards number 13, kicked the senior club’s first goal. At our inaugural Presidents Lunch Stephen Harrington welcomed VIP’s EFL Chairman Graham Halbish and Director of Football Operations Phil Murton , AFL Victoria Head Grant Williams as well as our supportive Councillors from the City Of Manningham Graham MacMillan and Meg Downie and he reiterated Park Orchards determination to secure Domeney Reserve as our long term home. The happiest man at the lunch was no doubt Mr. Wayne Handley, a decorated player/ coach at Canterbury in the 1980’s and a Park Orchards legend being both a life member and past president of the Park Orchards Junior Football Club. It would be hard to imagine a better way to start this journey as the Park Orchards community came out in force to witness history and all three playing groups did not let them down. We would like to put the word out for more volunteers to assist the club on Match Days at Domeney. Vacant Positions: include Bar Persons (rostered),Home Matches Ground Manager, Property Steward and Front Gate Attendees. Please contact the Club via the Website if you can Help. Our focus now turns to our first Away Game against the Eastern Lions. GO Sharks. south BeLgraVe: Last Saturday the Seniors certainly felt the heat from the Eastern Lions who kept with them all day. South Belgrave only pulled away in the final term with 13 to two scoring shots to eventually win by 39 points. The Reserves had a much easy time in their match in a one-sided affair winning by 74 points. The margin could have been more if not for inaccurate kicking by the South Boys, especially in the second half. 54 Our U19’s had to travel to Park Orchards to take on last year’s premiers. For coach Hugh Stern it was great to start the season with a full team and a bench. The South Belgrave boys stayed with the reigning Premiers for nearly threw quarters but Park Orchards got out to a handy lead in the final term. The final margin wasn’t a true reflection of the closeness for much of the game. Thanks to all who stayed behind and enjoyed the lamb & chicken spit beautifully cooked by Tim after a hard game of footy. Thanks to D Mac for organizing some games and helping with the meal. The Club handbook for 2012 is available at the bar for all members. Remember buy a community membership for $50 and join in the journey in 2012. First main Social Function is the Cocktail Night on May 12th so mark the diary. Today we take on our nemesis in Ferntree Gully, let’s go for 3 wins and show Division 4 that South Belgrave means business this year. GO SOUTH! surreY parK: Surrey hosted Sivan at Surrey Park Reserve in Round 1 and started the day well with a convincing 85-point win in the U19’s under new coach Rob Hubbard. Jenkin kicked 3 goals in his first game for the Panthers as did Gates and Barker with eight others sharing the spoils. Reid, Kennedy, White, Cook, Harvey-Nelson and Muling were among the best on the day. Surrey Reserves began poorly being held goalless to half time in what was a low scoring match. Surrey got going in the second half to outscore Silvan, but fell short by 17 points at the final siren. Collins kicked 2 goals and was among the best for Surrey along with Peat, Hatcher, Zivin, Maher and Rupena. Our senior team had a disappointing start to the season going down by 77 points. Crabtree, Herrick, Jeffries, Morris, Cleary and Joyner were among our best on the day. Surrey members and supporters are reminded of the first Presidents Luncheon for the season on Saturday 5 May – book now to avoid disappointment. the Basin: Great day for the club last week as we came away with three wins against FTG. The U19’s got the club off to a good start with a 14-goal win. Keep up the good work boys. A 10-goal victory for the reserves was a great result for our new coach in Matt Killian. We were struggling with numbers but managed to put a side on the field. The senior game was a great spectacle for all those that watched the game. In trying conditions, the Bears managed to turn around a five-goal halftime deficit to run out winners by 17 points. The boys really showed some character and never gave in to record our first win of the year. Awesome effort by Cults who bagged 9 goals and Spocky who managed three majors. Congratulations to young Jordan Stack who made his senior debut and acquitted himself well. This week, we travel to Forest Hill for another big day for the club. Awards will be held at 6.00pm, so make sure we all get back to the rooms to support the players and their efforts. PAST PLAYERS DAY: This will be held Round 4 on 5/5/12 against Eastern Lions. Please see Matt Smith or Brett Howlett for details. SOCIAL FUNCTIONS: Please keep an eye out on our website and in club advertising for all our function dates and make sure that you mark them in your calender.
