DIVISION 4
dIvISION 4 ClUB NOTeS
CanterBurY: Not a good start to the season for the
Cobras, but the only way is up. Reserves: With the amount
of new players, it will take some time for the team to gel. In
the first quarter, there were nerves on both sides, but Park
Orchards managed to take a three-goal lead. Canterbury did
not score in the second quarter, which saw the home side
ahead by 38 points at the half time break. We fought back
in the third quarter, but it was like trying to stop a runaway
horse. Park Orchards ended the game 52 points in front.
Better players: Price (six goals), Pearce, Boyd, H Giles,
Weinlich and Arner. Seniors: After a fairly even first quarter,
the home team had more of the ball in the second and
went into half time with a 18 point lead. Again, we fought
back and ended the third quarter down by 10 points. The
momentum was with us in the last quarter, but inaccurate
shooting for goals and time were our enemies. Better
players: Peel, King, McCasker, Walmsley, Lomax and
Beare. Don't forget the Hawaiian night at Canterbury tonite,
eastern Lions: Last week against South Belgrave,
the new look Lions didn’t come away with any points
from the two games but could hold their heads high.
With no U19’s this season, the reserves were up first.
South kicked some early goals and the Lions unable to
make any impact on the score board but for how much
South controlled the game they were only up by six
goals at half time. By three-quarter time the game was
over but to the boys credit they didn’t give up. Warbo,
Strati and Parr in the best. The Seniors were up next
and under new coach Mike Van den Broek (former
club captain) the boys hit the contest hard. A lot of the
crowd were surprised with how close the game was,
with only two goals between the two sides coming into
half time. D.Want was having a great game using his run
and aggression at the ball. But the Lions just couldn’t
keep up with South. In the end the scoreboard didn’t
truly reflect how close the contest was. Best J. Want, C.
McElroy, D. Want, G. Bailey. The Eastern Lions have a
different home ground for season 2012, with Fairpark
surface being redone this week’s home game against
Park Orchards will be played at Lewis Park (Melways
50B10). Hope to see the Lions supports there. DEN12
ferntree guLLY: Round 1 and off we went to
The Basin. First game jitters were there for all, players,
committee and supporters. The under 19’s started off
the day. The first half didn’t go as the Eagles wanted
it to go. Although the boys kept on going they didn’t
kick a goal until the last quarter. By this time it was a
bit too late. Well done boys keep your heads up. The
Reserves had a big game ahead of them, facing off to
last year’s Premiers. Our boys started off well to lead
by three points at the first break and seven at half time.
In the second half, The Basin came out firing, kicking
seven goals and FTG only managing one. We managed
to kick two more in the last, but The Basin ran out
64-point winners. In the seniors, The Basin came out
hard and kicked four goals to our two. But Ferntree
Gully kicked 10 goals to four in the second quarter. The
Basin managed to kick seven goals to our three in the
third, meaning there was only one point in it at the final
break. The final quarter was almost kick for kick, but
unfortunately The Basin kicked a couple extra goals to
win by seven points. Goals kickers were Ryan Pierce 4,
Mick Russo 3, Jack Callanan 2, Paul Hager 2, Jeremy
Stapleton, Phil Lawson, Ben Rawlings, Michael Topp
Rick Aitken all one each. Well done boys.
forest hiLL: Last week we kicked off 2012 in ideal
fashion recording two victories. So both Brett and John
saluted the judges on their first official hit out in charge
of their respective Zebra herds. The reserves were in
control of the match throughout and went on to record
an impressive 18 goal victory. The seniors flew out of the
blocks, aided by a decent breeze to kick five unanswered
goals to take a healthy lead into quarter time. However the
Cougars responded with five unanswered of their own, so
there was nothing separating the teams at the main break.
The second half was an arm wrestle throughout, and
fortunately the boys did enough to deliver a narrow win.
After building a healthy lead was disappointing to let slip,
however full credit to the Cougars who came back hard
after a slow start. Positive to see the boys were tested
and responded well, dug deep and deliver the victory. We
expect to improve on this performance moving forward,
but no better way to start the year other than a welldeserved
four points. This week we welcome the Bears
to Forest Hill, who always present a massive hurdle. We
look forward to the challenge of testing ourselves against
the Bears in our first home game of the year. Winning
first game – tick, now onto ticking the winning first home
game column! Good luck to all teams.
KiLsYth: The players’ reunion last weekend was a
great success. It was good to see all the older players,
especially Roy Baldwin – our No.1 Ticket Holder. Roy
played 400 games with the club and has many other
achievements – too many to mention. Bill Barrott was the
guest speaker and was well received by everyone who was
present. Thanks to Rod and Heather Paisley for organising
the day. At completion of the game, a trophy was
presented to the winning side (Forest Hill) by Joan Clegg,
dedicated to John Clegg, who was a past plater and coach
for Kilsyth and a coach at Forest Hill. The trophy will be
passed between both clubs – Kilsyth hopefully winning
side next time we meet the Zebras. SENIORS – Goals:
One goal each to Brett Frazer, Jamie Haag, Caleb Rigely,
James Anderson, Nathan McCulloch, Jorden Chenhall
and Hamish Hosking, Best: Brett Frazer, Jamie Haag and
Corey Suban. RESERVES – Goals: Callum Donaldson
2 and Alec Nyhuis 1, Best: Brad Lindgren and Jarred
Jurrjens (Ranga). Disappointing days for both teams.
Looking forward to wins next week! GO COUGARS!
nunawaDing: To all members and supporters,
welcome to the 2012 season! What a pre-season it has
been for the Nunawading Football Club. New coaches,
players and committee. I would like to welcome Frank
Salanitri who has taken on the job as Senior Coach
for the 2012 season. I would also like to take the
opportunity to welcome aboard all the new players who
have arrived at the club over the summer months. There
are far too many to mention individually so make sure
