He has spent over 60 years playing, coaching watching and helping clubs and the people in them. Today he is a committeeman at Boronia. Ian was late taking on a committee role and up until last year was more of a supporter, another opinion for a coach and an ear for a player or two. At finals time, he was always there to run the beer tent – until his wife took over a couple of years back. Ian is one of the great followers of the game. He has never been a great fan of the AFL, but he has been a devotee of local and country footy. He is the sort of bloke who’ll always say ‘G’day’ and ask how you are doing. He has helped a lot of players over his time. Ian Greenwood is a man that has been great for the game and he would tell you that it has been pretty good for him too. Mulgrave Football Club has a unique situation where four Members of one family have contributed over 200 years of volunteer service and support to the club. Bon Baines (now Andrews), daughter of Foundation Member Tom, has been involved with the Mulgrave Football Club since she was born. As a young girl, she would be at the club helping her mother, Hilda Baines, in the canteen and doing all other jobs that needed to be attended to. When Bon met Don Andrews, who later became her husband, he was playing for Dandenong Football Club. In 1953, Don joined Mulgrave and became the club’s senior games record holder of 250 games – a record that still stands today. He played in senior premiership sides, won Senior and Reserves Best and Fairests, captained-coached the reserves until 1968 and was President of the club from 1961-1963, then again in 1965 and 1970. In 1964 Don was rightly awarded Life Membership. Bon’s involvement has always been in the background. Over the years she has worked in the canteen and supported Don when he was President. In 1970 Bon was awarded Life Membership. Through their market garden business ‘Top Market Growers’, Don and Bon have been great sponsors of the Lions. They sponsored the club from the 1970’s until Don’s retirement in the early 2000’s. – A Sponsorship to the club spanning almost 30 years. Rod Andrews and Lesley Bieniak were introduced to Mulgrave at a very early age like their mother was by her parents. In their early years, Rod used to run the boundary and generally did what his father needed him to do. Lesley manned the scoreboard and helped her mother in the canteen. Rod’s playing career started in the Juniors where would play in the higher age groups to make up the numbers when they were short. When he made it to the senior ranks, he won a reserves and seniors premiership. Unfortunately injuries restricted his playing career, but this did not stop his on field involvement with him coaching the Under 18’s teams in 1981 and 1983. In 1984 Rod joined the committee as Vice- President, a position he held again from 1986-1989. He has since resumed this role again in 2011. He was club president from 1991-1993 and again in 1995 and he was awarded life membership in 1986. Lesley’s Involvement increased in 1980 when she was asked to join the team running Bingo at the Village Green, which then moved to the Monash Hotel and finally came to the Mulgrave Sports Club. Lesley was appointed Secretary in 1991, a position she held onto until 1993. She then became president of the Mulgrave Ladies Committee, a position she held for several years. Over the years Lesley has cooked counter-teas on a Saturday night, catered for and helped organise club functions and at one time washed every club jumper every week for two seasons. Bon has always been there to support Rod and Lesley when they were on the Committee. Whether it be working in the canteen or setting up for functions, Rod and Lesely have always known they can count on her. Now 70 years on and Bon is still passionate about the club. She still attends as many games and functions possible. She also has great delight knowing that her family’s legacy is still being passed on through Rod, Lesley and their families. Even though as a senior club Park Orchards is just beginning, the junior club has been in operation for over 40 years and continues to evolve. Michael O’Leary was involved in the junior club for almost 15 years and was awarded Life Membership of the club in 2010. Since the establishment of the Park Orchards Senior Football Club in 2011, Michael has been in charge of player registrations – an area that he is highly experienced in. His dedication to this role and his general willingness to assist has no limitations. We are asking clubs to submit nominations of volunteers who you believe deserve to be rewarded for their efforts. Please provide a 50-100 word nomination, documenting the volunteer’s service and what they mean to your club. Nominations can be emailed to enquiries@efl.org.au. A photo of your club’s nominated volunteer(s) would also be much appreciated. The league will visit your club to pay tribute to the volunteer, who will also be profiled in the Eastern Footballer.
