But just to clarify to all, our interpretation of the rule is somewhat more lenient than at AFL level. The EFL wants to only penalise the blatant ‘in play’ rushed behinds when a player has had significant opportunity to keep the ball in play and is not under any imminent pressure. A deliberate rushed behind will be awarded when: – a defender, at a kick out, kicks the ball back over the scoring line – a defender, at a kick out, has kicked the ball to himself, played on and disposed of the ball over the scoring line – a defender has been awarded a mark and/or free kick, played on and disposed of the ball over the scoring line – a defender has knocked the ball over the scoring line on the full from a boundary throw-in or field ball-up In assessing whether a free kick shall be awarded, the umpire shall give the benefit of the doubt to the defender. One umpire to double up for us this weekend is the newest AFL/VFL player to umpire “project”, Brent Wallace (son of Hawthorn legend Terry). Brent has shown in his first few matches, including last weekend’s Mitcham v Ringwood Under 19’s game, he has a great feel for the game and a genuine ability to adjudicate the game at a high and consistent level. Considering some clubs have excess playing numbers and some players missing out on games weekly, we believe it would be a great opportunity for them to stay ‘in touch’ with the game by field umpiring matches on Saturday mornings and even Sunday’s in the juniors. Whilst umpiring their own clubs wouldn’t be feasible, we could appoint these players/umpires at the ground nearest to their club to ensure they could make it back in time to watch their team in action. We would appoint an experienced umpire as a mentor with a player and there is no doubt this would be a great way for the players to maintain a high levels of fitness whilst not being picked to play.
