By Will Taylor UNder 19'S rePOrT The season is finally here! And at the end of the first round of the EastLink Under 19’s competition, some massive statements have already been made by clubs all across Divisions 2, 3 and 4. DIVISION 2 – Upper Ferntree Gully’s six-goal to two first term was the difference in its win over 2011 Grand Finalist Donvale at Kings Park, with the Kings eventually winning by 33 points. Upper Gully’s Tyson McWilliam booted four goals in a solid performance up forward while Brenton Toole was named best on ground for his side. Doncaster East stunned the highly fancied Montrose side by 50 points at Montrose Recreation Reserve on the back of a seven-goal to one third term. The Lions only led by 20 points at half time but powered away in the second half. One of the biggest early comebacks of the season saw Rowville come from 14 points down at three-quarter time to kick seven goals to two in the final term to run over a very gallant Mulgrave side by 19 points. Rowville’s Paul McEwin led the way for his side, booting an impressive five goals. The biggest blow out occurred at Schramms Reserve, with Bayswater making a statement to the rest of the competition. The ‘Waters destroyed Doncaster away from home, running out 160-point winners. DIVISION 3 – Chirnside Park’s Ned Martin booted three goals as the Panthers cruised past Coldstream by four goals at Kimberley Reserve. North Ringwood got past Templestowe by 10 points at Quambee Reserve, mainly thanks to Reece Bedggood’s seven goals. At Walker Reserve, Wantirna South gave the Glen Waverley Hawks a Division 3 football lesson, eventually winning by 118 points. After a close first term, in which the Devils led by six points, the class of the Devils showed as the Hawks managed just four goals for the game, while the Devils booted 21. Beau Lesueur booted six goals for the winners. Boronia started the season with a five-goal win over Warrandyte at Warrandyte Reserve. However the Hawks were very inaccurate in front of goals, scoring 11.20 to the Bloods’ 8.8. That is something they’ll look to improve on. DIVISION 4 – The Basin’s new recruit Jarrod Hardy, who came from Bayswater last season, helped the Bears to a convincing 14-goal win over Ferntree Gully Eagles at Batterham Reserve. Hardy scored four goals for the Bears as they led from start to finish. Defending champions Park Orchards started where they let off, comfortably defeating South Belgrave at Domeney Reserve. Matthew Snowball showed his class and booted seven goals. Even though Surrey Park’s senior team isn’t going too well in recent times, its Under 19’s side is making a huge statement in Division 4. The Panthers led from start to smash Silvan by 85 points at Surrey Park Reserve. No doubt they will want to go one step further than a semifinal which they reached in 2011. Cannot wait to see Division 1 Under 19’s start up this weekend! 13 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER 2012
