Chamber’s Lunar New Year Banquet 

Mayor Gary Taylor Retires 

Ceremonies were held for Mayor Gary Taylor at the February 22, 2011, Tuesday Night Council Meeting. After 37 

years of service, Gary Taylor is ready to retire. 

Before stepping down, Mayor Taylor talked about his 37 years in service, from Councilmember to Mayor, 

several times changing roles. He talked a little bit about his beginnings with the city, how his wife helped him 

by taking the recordings at his first council 

meeting and how his family always supported 

him. He thanked his family and friends and 

spoke on how the 37 years just flew by, and 

how he wasn’t worried about leaving because 

he felt the city was in good hands. He said he 

looks forward to his retirement and he intends 

on spending lots of time with his family and 

looks forward to spending some time fishing. 

The Council Chambers were full with lots 

of family and friends, standing room only. 

The 4 Council Members, Margaret Clark, 

Polly Low, Sandra Armenta and Steven Ly, 

Mayor Pro tem, presented him with several

gifts. One was a souvenir of his 37 years with the city, a white 

street sign with his name on it, “Gary Taylor Ave.”, along with 

the 37 years served. He also received several plaques, certificates 

and a gavel.

Mayor, were representatives from the Office of Congresswoman 

Judy Chu, Office of Assemblyman Mike Eng, Joseph Fennell 

from the Temple Sheriff’s Station, Assistant Fire Chief, Nick 

Duvally from our local Firestation #4 and #42, Bob Bruesch from 

the Garvey School District, and from the Rosemead Chamber of

the Lunar New Year and 

Honors Congresswoman 

Judy Chu 

On February 10, 2011, 

the Rosemead Chamber of 

Commerce celebrated the Lunar 

New Year with their 9th Annual 

Lunar New Year Banquet at 

888 Seafood Restaurant in 

Rosemead. Over 300 people 

were there to help celebrate the 

event. This year’s Title Sponsor 

was Pacific Alliance Bank, 

represented by Robert Oehler, 

President and CEO. 

This year the newly formed 

Asian Business Committee 

honored our 32nd District 

Congresswoman Judy Chu, for all her support to the businesses 

of Rosemead. Unfortunately the honored Congresswoman was 

unable to attend, but she sent along her Representative Becky 

Cheng and a very gracious televised acceptance. 

The event was complete with a nine course Chinese 

banquet, a Karaoke Contest and lots of raffle prizes, and 

everyone attending received a traditional red envelope stuffed 

with a delicious gold foiled chocolate and a Mega Millions 

Lottery Ticket. 

Joining us for the evening was Senator Ed Hernandez, 24th 

District, and his representative, Susan Reyes. This was the 

first time that we were honored to have him attend one of our 

events. 

The evening itself was fun, but it was the Karaoke contest 

that made the evening. 7 contestants dueled to place and they all 

were great. The contestants were: Ed Chen, Athens Services, 

Erika Ponzo, Holiday Inn Express, Lawrence Lai, Palm Motel, 

Chris Musgrave, Brown’s Jewelry & Loan Co., Erix Oliva, El 

Monte Rosemead Adult School, Blaine Baucher, San Gabriel 

Valley Business Journal, Steven Hernandez, Wells Fargo Bank. 

Jose Calderon, Holiday Inn Express. The winners were 1st Jose

new aquatic centers at the Rosemead and 

Garvey Parks. 

The seasonal positions the city will be

On January 27,2011, the Rosemead Chamber Business Caravan visited 3 businesses in the 

city of Rosemead. The Business Caravan is a group of key individuals from the Chamber and 

the City that go monthly to visit the Chamber members. The purpose of the visit is to hear the

Rosemead HS Girls Basketball Clinches Third Straight MVL Title 

Rosemead High School’s girl’s varsity 

basketball team won 46-27 at Gabrielino 

High School on Feb. 2, 2011, and then 

went home to defeat Arroyo 39-27 on Feb. 

4, to clinch at least a tie for the Mission 

Valley League championship, which is 

Rosemead’s third straight win. 

With the win against Arroyo, Rosemead 

continued its MVL unbeaten streak to 24 

straight games and improved to 8-0 in 

MVL and 13-11 overall while Arroyo was 

6-2 in MVL going into the last week of 

MVL action this season. 

Rosemead led Gabrielino 17-8 at 

halftime and 31-15 after three quarters. 

MVL leading scorer sophomore guard 

Melody Gauthier scored 19 points and 

had six rebounds, while sophomore 

teammate Sydney Hua added 10 points, 

three rebounds, 12 steals, and one assist. 

Rosemead senior guard Kim Hong had 

seven points, six rebounds, and two blocked 

shots, senior center Amanda Iglesias 

contributed six rebounds, two points and 

two blocked shots, and Christine Giang 

had six rebounds and two points. 

Rosemead earned a 14-8 lead after the 

first quarter against Arroyo, and increased 

it to 24-14 at halftime. In the third quarter it 

was a defensive battle with both teams only 

scoring two points. Rosemead outscored 

Arroyo 13-11 in the fourth quarter on the 

way to the win. 

Hua led Rosemead with 13 points, five 

steals, three rebounds, one assist and one 

blocked shot. And Hua got plenty of help 

from her teammates. Gauthier contributed 

11 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, six 

steals, and four blocked shots, Giang added 

six points, five rebounds, two steals and 

two assists, and Hong had seven rebounds

a new look. The 

library will close 

for remodeling on 

Tuesday, February 22. It is anticipated that 

the library will reopen in May 2011. 

Holds, pickup, and book returns will be 

available from the Express library at Rosemead 

Library, 8800 Valley Blvd, Rosemead. 

During this closed period, the library 

will receive a new teen and children’s area, 

lounge area and carpet; self check machines 

for customer self service; and new service 

and five steals.

Rosemead’s junior varsity 

improved to 14-3 overall.

Remodeling Project

2 tsp. baking soda

Combine apples and sugar and let stand. Beat eggs, and 

add oil and vanilla. Mix and sift flour and baking power, 

cinnamon and salt. Stir in alternately with apple sugar 

mixture. Add walnuts. Pour into greased and floured 

13x9x2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees 45 minutes to 

1 hour, or until cake is done. Let stand in pan to cool. 

Prepare icing by combining all icing ingredients. Bring 

to rolling boil and pour over cooled cake.

Facts about St. Patrick’s Day 

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? 

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th. 

It is a religious feast day and the anniversary of 

St. Patrick’s death in the fifth century Ireland. The 

Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday 

for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, 

which falls during the Christian season of Lent, 

Irish families would traditionally attend church 

in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. 

Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of 

meat were waived and people would dance, drink 

and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon 

and cabbage. 

Where did the tradition of Pinching 

start? 

It’s thought that the pinching started 

in the early 1700s, about the time that 

awareness of St. Patrick’s as a holiday 

came to the fore, too, in Boston, in the 

Massachusetts colony. They thought if 

you wore green, it made you invisible 

t o the Leprechauns, which was 

good because they would 

pinch anyone 

they could see. So the 

pinching is to warn and 

remind you about the Leprechauns. 

Pinching those not wearing green 

on St. Patrick’s Day is an American 

tradition, having really nothing 

to do with Ireland. The truth is, 

Irish people think Americans are 

crazy. St. Patrick’s Day is not 

even remotely celebrated over 

there as heavily as it is in the US. 

Why do we eat Corned Beef and 

Cabbage on this day? 

Corned beef and cabbage is 

the traditional meal enjoyed by many 

on St. Patrick’s Day, but only half 

of it is truly Irish. Cabbage has long 

been a staple of the Irish diet, but it was 

traditionally served with Irish bacon, not corned 

beef. The corned beef was substituted for bacon 

by Irish immigrants to the Americas around the 

turn of the century who could not afford the real 

thing. They learned about the cheaper alternative 

from their Jewish neighbors.

as many Californians, respect him for that. 

“While I understand that the Governor’s 

roadmap to fiscal solvency calls for urgent 

drastic measures, the public should rest 

assured that our budget subcommittees 

are going through all of his proposals very 

thoroughly right now, and we’re having good 

discussions in caucus on our priorities. I 

certainly have no doubts that we are on track 

toward meeting his March deadline.

want the same thing—a California that works.

have good jobs and making sure we have

If you were wondering why your 

table was set up so neatly or why there 

was plenty to drink at the Lunar New 

Year Festival Dinner on Feb. 10th at 888 

Seafood Restaurant, you can thank these 

young volunteers from the Rosemead 

Youth Leadership Center. 

A handful of young, eager volunteers 

came to the restaurant early and set up 

the more than two dozen tables, organized 

the chairs to make sure there were 10 to a 

table and passed out the drinks. And “They 

had a great time doing it”, said Volunteer 

Coordinator Karen Dang. Dang added 

while she was new on the job, it went 

rather smoothly. “The Lunar New Year 

Dinner was my first job as coordinator,” 

said Dang, who is a junior at San Gabriel 

High School. “I talked to the people at 

888 Seafood Restaurant and found out 

what they wanted. Then we passed out the 

jobs to our volunteers.” And there weren’t 

just one or two volunteers for Dang to 

supervise. More than a dozen showed up 

ready to work!

Public Charity. RYLC offers afterschool 

enrichment programs to young people in the 

community. Based at Temple Intermediate 

School in Rosemead, RYLC loves to have 

teenage students volunteer and help the 

younger kids at the school, said Executive 

Director Keno Deary. “By volunteering, 

these students learn responsibility, hard 

work and discipline, as well as how to 

work with others,” Deary said. “And they 

might even get school credit for it!” 

Dang added the night went really 

well under her direction and after being 

a volunteer for a year and a half she is 

looking forward to working more for RYLC 

before heading off to college in another 18 

months. “I was really anxious at first,” she 

said. “It was really busy. I’m really happy 

how everything turned out.”

During the preliminary auditions held last 

October through December, students performed 

before panels of expert judges and were given in 

depth evaluations of their performance intended 

to visit this wonderful school to see first hand the 

great things that happen here every day.”

509 continuation high schools during the 2009-10 

school year. 

“We have a dedicated staff and also 

tremendous support from all district personnel,” 

added Arteaga. “We have a great plan to continue 

to give students a second chance and help all our 

district students achieve their academic goals with 

our various programs.”

Miller Dial Establishes Innovator 

Scholarship for EMUHSD 

Students 


In an effort to support the advancement of 

El Monte Union High School District students 

who share its innovative spirit and determination, 

manufacturing and engineering company Miller 

Dial, LLC, announced the establishment of the 

Miller Dial Young Innovator Scholarship. 

Much of Miller Dials success during the 

past 74 years has been made possible by the 

talented workforce of El Monte and surrounding 

communities, said Jim Kaldem, Miller Dial 

president. The Miller Dial Young Innovator 

Scholarship is a way to express our gratitude to 

the community and support the next generation of 

innovative thinkers here in Southern California. 

Open to seniors in all six of the District’s 

high schools, the scholarship will be awarded 

on a “studentís ability to either create a project 

that demonstrates innovation in the area of 

sustainability and environmental improvement 

or create a community service project that raises 

awareness about the issue the project is addressing.” 

Applicants must also write a one-page essay 

describing the role innovation, as well as their

Approximately 150 El Monte-Rosemead 

Adult School students enrolled in the transitioning 

English Language Learner program received their 

ESL (English Second Language) completion 

certificates during ceremonies they conducted 

themselves. During the ceremony, students 

displayed their work which included writing 

portfolios, gave speeches on their struggles 

adjusting to life in the United States and showed 

off their various talents through multicultural 

displays. 

The program includes a blend of formal 

transition classes and both formal and informal 

transition activities and strategies that support 

student transition to a higher level. 

“The transition really starts in our advanced 

low ESL classes where students are already being 

prepared to go into the secondary education 

community, has played in their development as a 

student.
