Classic Casino Parties is headquartered in Yorba Linda, California, and they will be doing our 3rd 

Annual Wild, Wild West Casino Night on November 30, 2012. This is the third year they have been 

contracted by us, and they do the best job. Classic Casino Parties has one goal in mind, and that’s

Businesses throughout Los Angeles 

County and across the state have been 

targeted by scam artists who wear 

official-looking “uniforms” and perform 

questionable “fire safety inspections” 

in local businesses. These individuals 

typically enter businesses suggesting that 

they represent the fire department and 

state that “they need to inspect the fire 

protection system,” or that “they need to 

inspect various components of the fire 

protection system.” These components 

can include alarms, fire sprinklers, 

hood systems, and fire extinguishers. 

Oftentimes, these “inspectors” ask an 

unsuspecting employee to sign a form 

authorizing the inspections. Several 

weeks, or months, after these fraudulent 

inspections are completed, business 

owners often receive an invoice for 

various services that were fraudulently 

performed.

Business Owners Need to be Aware of 

Phony Fire Inspectors 

Daryl L. Osby, Fire Chief 

County of Los Angeles Fire Department 

Fire Chief Daryl Osby advises business 

owners and employees to be on the lookout 

for phony “fire inspectors”. 

The County of Los Angeles Fire 

Department inspects businesses annually 

and does not charge for these inspections. 

Business owners, managers, and employees 

should not let anyone inspect their fire 

extinguishers, sprinkler systems, hood 

systems, or any other protection devices 

unless they have an agreement with a 

specific fire protection company. 

Business owners should ensure that 

any fire inspection that is completed at 

their business is legitimate. This can be 

accomplished by following four simple 

steps. 

1. Inspectors should introduce themselves 

as County of Los Angeles Fire Department 

employees or identify their business and 

produce a business card. Allowing an 

individual to enter your business without 

a clear understanding of who that person 

is, as well as their intentions, is not 

recommended. 

2. Inspectors should be able to present a 

copy of their current County or City business 

license. Legitimate contractors should have 

a “C-10” endorsement to inspect fire alarms 

or a “C-16” endorsement to inspect fire 

sprinklers and fix fire protection systems. 

Licenses can be verified by checking with 

the Contractor’s State License Board at 

http://www.cslb.ca.gov. 

3. Inspectors should be able to tell you what 

they intend to do and what the estimated 

costs will be. Never pay in cash. Invoicing

future legal avenues if the inspection turns 

out to be fraudulent. 

4. Inspectors must leave any broken and/or 

replaced parts with you. They also must 

provide a signed invoice. 

Remember! You may always refuse 

service and contact the County of Los 

Angeles Fire Department for guidance. 

We will gladly advise you of any required 

service schedules for your fire protection 

systems and assist you in verifying that 

the company you choose is qualified to 

provide the appropriate inspection, testing, 

and maintenance. If you suspect suspicious 

activity, contact law enforcement, your 

municipal fire department or the County 

of Los Angeles Fire Department’s Public 

Affairs Section at (323) 881-2411.

Retiring the Colors at Savannah Memorial Park 

Anyone with an old or damaged American flag is invited to bring it 

to the Savannah Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, November 11, 

2012 (Veterans Day), where it will be properly disposed in a patriotic 

flag retirement ceremony. The burning of the flag is the only prescribed 

method for disposal according to the U.S. flag code. There will be a 

short ceremony to honor all members of our armed forces first and then 

the flag retirement ceremony will begin.

whether in full or non-working condition. It includes most electronics or electric 

appliances with a cord or circuit board such as: 

Computer Monitors, Television sets, PC Systems, Printers, Laptops, Copiers, Scanners, Fax 

Machines, Toner Cartridges, UPS & PDAs, Power Supplies, Main Frame Units, Networking 

Equipment, Mother Board Systems, VCR/VCD/DVD Players, Home Entertainment 

Systems, Landline and Cellular Phones, & Small Portable Devices. We also accept car 

and forklift batteries. There is a $5.00 service fee for Microwave Ovens. We do not accept:

1 c. pineapple juice 

16 oz. can whole-berry cranberry sauce 

Dissolve gelatin in water then melt 

cranberry sauce in the hot mixture. Add 

pineapple juice. Chill until thickened, 

about 1 hour. Stir in remaining 

ingredients. Chill until firm in a pretty 

glass bowl, or try a holiday mold and 

place in a bed of curly lettuce.

Assemblymember Eng Honored As 

Water Champion 

The San Gabriel Valley Water 

Association’s Upper District held an event 

on October 15, 2012, to thank Assembly 

Member Mike Eng (D-Alhambra) and 

present him with a plaque for his many 

years of dedicated service and outstanding 

representation of the water sector. 

“I am honored to receive this 

recognition as water issues are particularly 

important in a relatively arid state with a 

large population,” said Assembly Member 

Eng. “As the representative of a district 

that sits atop the largest Superfund site 

in the country, it is vital that we continue 

to make progress on protecting this most 

precious of resources.” 

Over the course of his tenure, Assembly 

Member Eng has taken a particular interest in 

water issues and has brought over $100 million to 

the San Gabriel Valley for water cleanup projects 

and was a member of the Assembly working 

group on water. He was previously awarded the 

“Golden Pump” by the Upper San Gabriel Valley 

Water District. He recently authored Assembly 

Bill 685, commonly referred to as the Human 

Right to Water bill, which was signed into law 

last month. 

The San Gabriel Valley Water Association is 

a nonprofit public benefit corporation founded in 

1955 that plays an active role in the management 

and protection of the Valley’s water resources. 

The Association was instrumental in the creation 

of the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water 

District.

This Thanksgiving Day, after you’ve

Effective October 19, 2012, Employers 

will need to change notices, postings 

and employee handbook policies related 

to discrimination and harassment 

prevention to reflect two recently signed 

bills, AB 1964 and AB 2386. 

Religious Dress/Grooming 

AB 1964 amends Government Code 

sections 12926 and 12940 and clarifies 

that the Fair Employment and Housing 

Act’s (FEHA) discrimination protections 

and reasonable accommodation 

requirements cover religious dress 

practices and religious grooming 

practices. 

As stated in the analysis of the bill, 

the intent is to “provide clarity and 

ensure that all religions receive equal 

protection under the law.” The added 

language states: 

“Religious dress practice” is 

construed broadly to include the wearing 

or carrying of religious clothing, head 

or face coverings, jewelry, artifacts 

and any other item that is part of the 

observance by an individual of his or 

her religious creed. 

“Religious grooming practice” 

is also to be construed broadly and 

includes all forms of head, facial and

Two New Discrimination Laws Mean 

Changes for Policies and Posters

Breast Feeding 

AB 2386 amends California Government 

Code Section 12926 and makes it clear 

that breast feeding is protected by law and 

discrimination on that basis is illegal. 

The new legislation was enacted, 

in part, to reflect a decision by the Fair 

Employment and Housing Commission 

(FEHC) in 2009 in which an employee was 

terminated because she was nursing her 

baby during her lunchtime break. 

The FEHC’s decision was designated 

as having precedential authority, thus such 

discrimination is a violation of FEHA.
