<strong>Poor</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Settlement</strong>, <strong>Removal</strong> & <strong>Asylum</strong> <strong>Reception</strong> Orders, <strong>Leigh</strong> <strong>Union</strong> (1884-1929)<br />

The <strong>Leigh</strong> <strong>Poor</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Union</strong> was established in 1837 with responsibility for administering poor relief, maintaining workhouses <strong>and</strong> supervising the other functions of the former overseers of the poor.<br />

These responsibilities included the issuing of removal <strong>and</strong> settlement papers (for the removal/return of those seeking financial aid from the <strong>Union</strong>), <strong>and</strong> the removal of individuals deemed to be<br />

suffering from a mental illness to the county asylums.<br />

The documents indexed below give details of those individuals in contact with the <strong>Leigh</strong> <strong>Union</strong> under these powers <strong>and</strong> authorities. Two series are indexed:<br />

Orders for the removal of individuals to the asylums - G/Lei/45/1; G/Lei/45/2; G/Lei/45/3; G/Lei/45/4<br />
