A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE This fall, Asian & Pacifi c Islander Wellness Center— in collaboration with community partners Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center, Tom Waddell Health Center, and Harm Reduction Therapy Center— was designated a “Center of Excellence” for HIV care by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, one of only fi ve such Centers in San Francisco. Funded by the Ryan White CARE Act, our Tenderloin Center of Excellence will serve uninsured and under-insured people living with HIV/AIDS with a special emphasis on homeless people, transgenders, immigrants and refugees, sex workers, and gay men. With our satellite sites in Downtown Oakland and Daly City, A&PI Wellness Center annually serves more than 200 Asians and Pacifi c Islanders living with HIV/AIDS and their families in the Bay Area, and remains the primary point of entry into the healthcare system for newly diagnosed A&PIs in Northern California. : : w e l l n e s s : : c l i e n t - c e n t e r e d n e s s : : : : s e x - p o s i t i v i t y : : r e s p e c t : : : : c o m p a s s i o n : : j u s t i c e : : l e a d e r s h i p : : At the Center December 2005 Miss Hawai’i 2004, Olena Rubin, Banyan Tree Project ambassador FAMILIES FIGHTING HIV STIGMA: May 19, 2005, designated by the federal government as the First Annual National Asian & Pacifi c Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. RESPONDING TO COMMUNITY NEEDS
In July, we expanded our San Francisco site by 25% to
meet greater programming and services needs. Our Fourth
Floor facility now includes a full kitchen, additional meeting
rooms, and a 36’ x 32’ space called The Banyan Room
for convening local, statewide and national trainings and
conferences, and hosting community events.
In September, we launched our Clinical Internship Program.
Four social work graduate students will spend their academic
year at A&PI Wellness Center and receive intensive training
and supervision. Currently, San Francisco State University
School of Social Work and UC Berkeley School of Social
Welfare offer placements with us for students who are
either clinically oriented or focused on administration and
Devesh (wearing medal) with
cheerleaders Ignatius Bau (former Board
Chair),Chet Chan, Cliff Hsia, Simon Ho,
