6. Foreign Trade
a. Consumer goods which before the last war accounted for two
thirds of all imports, now represent no more than half. On the other
hand, imports of fuel, raw materials and capital goods have grown appre­
ciably.
b. The change in exports is also indicative of the steady trans­
formation of the Malagasy economy: export of bulk products of relatively
little value -(corn and cassava) are decreasing, while on the other hand,
there is an increase in exports of relatively valuable products (peanutes,
vanilla, tobacco and cloves).
