talize the lives of the residents in the economically depressed area. they began<br />
by financing a wide range of rural industries, a progressive school and creating<br />
a community where every aspect of the arts could co-exist and flourish. I<br />
spent two exciting years there gaining an appreciation of the community that<br />
develops when dedicated professionals—many of whom were permanent residents—are<br />
encouraged to add their expertise and ideas to enriching society.<br />
then, in 1953 I was accepted by sidney sussex College, Cambridge, to study<br />
for a degree in natural science.<br />
on the day I received my degree, I was free to do whatever I chose. I had<br />
no dependants, a few savings and an ambition to see the world. the expedition<br />
to Colombia would be a stepping stone to unimagined adventures.<br />

With funds and equipment collected, the expedition sailed in July 1957 on<br />
La Reina del Mar, one of the last passenger liners to make regular runs<br />
