It’s been best described as
a love revolution-- the random
acts of kindness
felt around
the world in
memory of
Tucker Wade
Johnson.
There has been
a scholarship
for a student
in the Ukraine,

Afghanistan, a tire
changed, snow

tolls paid, a smile,
a helping hand,
the list goes on and
on-- all in the name
of love for a little boy
who touched the
hearts of everyone
who knew him.
Tucker had just
graduated from
kindergarten and was
looking forward to being
a 1st grader at Mountain
View-Gotebo Elementary.
He loved John Deere
tractors, anything that had

going to the lake, skipping

woof-woof and baa-baa.
Tucker was a live out loud,
laugh out loud, and dance like
no one is watching kind of kid.
He was not yet seven years old
when
he lost his life
in a tragic go-cart accident on
July 1st, 2011.
A year of incredible grief and
sadness for his tight-knit family
and their extended communities
of Mountain View, Gotebo and
by Debbie McDonald
Sterling began. According
to Misty Johnson, Tucker’s
mother, the support, love and
the kindness of others that
would carry them through

lives began immediately.
Before they even got
home from the hospital on
that heartbreaking day,
dozens of people had
gathered to wait, support
and be there for them.

as she thinks about the
love that continues to
surround their family
and how words seem
inadequate to express
what her grateful
heart feels. It would
have been easy to
be consumed by
that dark world of
depression and
grief without so
many people
around to make
sure they were all
okay.
Early this

anniversary of Tucker’s death
approached, Misty’s sister,
Ronita Bridges, decided to
take a proactive approach to
the feelings she knew that date
would inevitably provoke.
A Facebook challenge was
issued. The task was simple--
perform a random act of
kindness in Tucker’s memory

post the experience back to the
wall.
The result was like that of
skipping a stone. Within hours
the ripple of good deeds began
to appear, friends of friends were
creating a wallpaper of kindness
on Tucker’s wall.
The family had requested a
week and little did they realize
the die of kindness had been
cast and with each new post
their message was being carried
to people
all over
the world.
It would
continue
far longer
than they
could have
imagined.
Misty
says her
family
has been
comforted
by the love
RAK4T has
brought out
in people,
“RAK4T is
not really
about us, it’s about the way you
make someone feel and the
way you feel about yourself after
you’ve performed one”.
During October, in honor
of Breast Cancer Awareness
month, Sterling Schools FCCLA
and RAK4T have partnered
together to bring some random
acts of kindness to area cancer
patients.
On November 9th they will

home basketball game and the
proceeds of a cancer awareness
T-shirt being sold during October
will be donated to several area
patients through random acts of
kindness in memory of Tucker.
You can purchase your
PEACE, LOVE, RAK4T cancer
awareness T-shirt for $12.00
by calling 580.365.4303 and
asking for Ginger Seibold or
Ronita Bridges at Sterling Public
Schools. You can also follow the
love on Facebook on Tucker’s
Digging Up the Roots
of Your Family Tree by Jim Joplin
Have you ever wondered
where you came from – past
your mother and father? If you
answered “Yes” then you’re
among millions of people who
have researched their family
genealogy. October is National
Genealogy Month, and in an

a little easier, I’ve compiled a
handful of places to begin your
search.
Before I turn out a list of
web sites (that you’ve probably
heard commercials for) I’d like
to touch on a place to start. If
you’re from around the area,
and even if you’re not, the
Public Library is a great place
to start your search. There
are volumes upon volumes
of material for researching
your genealogy. You may be
thinking, “I have no idea where
to start.” That’s okay. There are
friendly folks who are eager to help
you on your journey.
I’ll be honest, one of the reasons
I wanted to help with this piece
was because my genealogy had
already been done. One of my
great aunts compiled and created
the family tree for several of the
Joplin branches.
If you’ll indulge me, I’ll share her
info for my branch here (starting
with me along with birth years,
going back nine generations): Me
(1971), Glen I. (1946), Delbert G.
(1909), John B. (1885), Levi L.
(1845), William C. (1819), Silas M.
(1796), William M. (1768), Ralph II
(1691), and Ralph Jopling (no birth
year provided). By the way, that’s
not a typo; at some point between
Ralph I and myself, the G was
dropped from our last name. Other
branches of the family tree kept the
G.

information about what they did,
where they settled, and maybe
even the coat of arms for your
family. It seems the Joplins and
Joplings descended from a Finnish
knight who was born sometime
in the mid 16th century. When
they settled in the new world,
they chose Virginia as their home.
But, enough about me and my

discover your family’s beginnings.
If you’re searching online,
Ancestry.com is the leader in
online genealogy searching.
Ancestry.com is extensive and
comprehensive. They boast as
the largest genealogy website
in the world. Membership

days, and the continuing fees
are very competitive, ranging
from $19.95 per month to
an annual membership of
$12.95 per month for the
US Deluxe Membership and
$29.95 per month to an annual
membership of $24.95 for the
World Deluxe Membership.

membership are that you can
search all over the world. This
could come in handy if you
want to go back before North
America was settled.
The second highest rated
genealogy site is Archives.
com which is relatively new,
but still boasts a catalog of
over 2.1 billion entries. The
biggest advantage that I can
see is the membership costs.
After a 7-day free trial, a three
month membership is $19.95. If
you’re serious about using the
site, I would suggest the annual
membership at $39.95 (that’s $3.33
per month).
Rounding out the top three
is Genealogy.com (which is a
sister site of Ancestry.com) and
as such, has access to the vast
resources of that site. This site has

have – actually two somethings:
US Census Information and
International Passenger records.
These two items are under the
Gold membership, and the cost is a
little prohibitive at $199.99 annually.
But, if you’re very serious about

OKIE MAGAZINE www.okiemagazine.com Page 6

When I picked up the phone one
spring day in 1997 I never expected
to hear the trembling voice of an
older gentleman on the other end of
the line.
His voice was thick with emotion
as he repeatedly asked me, “The
pictures you sent me,
where did you get them?
This is my family.”
And so began a
journey that would
take me through Nazioccupied
Poland,
through the Jewish
ghettos of Grodno,
through the horrors of the

the peace of knowing.
My mother lost her
father in 1946 when she was just 8
years old. He was 50 when he died
and had said nothing of where he
came from and what had happened
there during World War II, though
I’m certain he knew.
All that was left behind of his
history were faded photographic
postcards of stern looking people
in well made clothing, which had
writing on the back that no one
could read.
I’d always been interested in
genealogy, so I did some research
and had the Russian and Yiddish
on the back of the cards translated
so that we were able to learn the
names of some of these distant
A Genealogical Journey
Through the Holocaust
relatives and learn that one of them
was his sister Sonya, another, her
daughter Raya.
After encountering some
incredibly kind and generous
people on the Jewish Genealogy
website (jewishgen.org) I was
able to continue putting the pieces
together. I learned my grandfather’s
real name, when he came through
Ellis Island and more. One
man contacted me to see if my
mother’s family was related to the
Freydowicz family written about in
Dr. Felix Zandman’s book, Never
the Last Journey. I had no idea and
the book was no longer available.
This wonderful man went to Strand
Books in NYC where he lived,
bought me a copy of the book,
mailed it to me and would accept
no payment from me.
When the book arrived, what I
found inside would both change me
and haunt me. The pictures in the
center matched those of the family
on the post cards. And as I read, I
learned the fate of many of them. I
read about Cousin Rebecca, shot
in the head by the Nazis. I tried to
comprehend how they hid behind
a false wall in an apartment, still

by Becky Parks
their mothers tried desperately to
keep their cries silent. I read how
Felix’s grandfather, Nochum, my
grandfather’s brother sat outside
that wall with the little ones until
they were taken away, never to be
seen again.
The lovely woman from the
photos, my mother’s Aunt Sonya
was beat in the head by a Nazi with
a bead tipped whip until her scalp
split open. She was later killed in
the Treblinka concentration camp.
A cousin, Rebecca, was shot point
blank in the head.
But the most
remarkable thing I took
away from this book was
the survival of Felix and his
uncle, Sender. Enclosed
in a small black hole with a
husband and wife couple
he remained hidden

the Puchalski’s bedroom,

long, and four feet deep
for a year and a half. In the pit,
in total darkness, Felix learned
mathematics by heart from his
uncle.
Felix and Sender survived the
Holocaust when the rest of their
family didn’t. Felix went on to the
Sorbonne in Paris and earned a
doctorate in physics. He became
the CEO of a multi-million dollar
corporation. He passed away
last year, but his story will live on.
Genealogy provided my family
with a glimpse into the past, which,
while it was unpleasant, still gave
us the peace of knowing the story
behind those postcards sent from
Belarus so many, many years ago.
Picture it: You’ve just eaten a big
meal; so big that you have to undo
the top button on your pants, then
the question of dessert comes up.
What do you do? Well, believe it
or not, your brain overrides the
stomach and says,
“Yes, let’s have
dessert.” Ever
wonder
why that
happens?
Well, this
month
I’ll tackle
that very
question.
What
better month
then National
Dessert Month to
discuss the question of whether or
not to have dessert with your meal?
It doesn’t matter where to eat out,
every restaurant – whether fast food
or sit-down restaurant – everyone

could be something small like
Applebee’s Dessert Shooters which
are a scaled down version of some
classic desserts served in actual
shot glasses. Or perhaps their
Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae
which, by the way, is the most
calorie-laden, saturated-fat-packed
dessert of all the chain restaurants
(it boasts more saturated fats than
Wendy’s Baconater Triple Burger).
Maybe, somewhere in between
these two is something that you call
your favorite.
So why, even though we may be
full, do we say, “yes” to the dessert
question? Well, believe it or not, it’s
all in your head. Literally.
Permit me to throw a little biology
at you: When you eat enough to
push your stomach past
a certain threshold,
chemical and
neural signals
are sent to
the brain
to tell us
to stop
eating.
Now,
the brain
knows the
stomach
is full, but
the pleasure
center also knows
that something sweet (especially
chocolate) is going to trigger
pleasure, so the stomach overrides
the chemical and neural signals
and tells you to go for it.
Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the
National Institute of Drug Abuse
in Maryland (and someone who
obviously has way too much free
time on her hands), has done
extensive research on why we eat
dessert when we are already full.
Dr. Volkow has determined that
the original balance, between the
stomach’s chemical and neural
impulses and the pleasure center
of the brain, which helped control
calorie intake, and therefore
weight, in check, has been altered
by recent history’s cornucopia of
desserts and junk food which we
are surrounded by on a daily basis.
Dr. Volkow has concluded that
an imbalance has occurred making
the want for endorphins from the
brain’s pleasure center so strong
that it overrides the stomach’s
impulses.
Lora Brody, author of Growing
Up on the Chocolate Diet wrote,
“Don’t wreck a sublime chocolate
experience by feeling guilty.
Chocolate isn’t like premarital sex.
It will not make you pregnant. And it
always feels good.”
There have been countless
research projects devoted to
chocolate. An article in issue
9, volume 124 of the Oxford
Journal of Medicine speaks to the

Believe me when I tell you that to
really understand it, you need to
have several letters behind your
name.
A similar article published by the
University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio made it
much easier to understand: Dr.
Bankole A. Johnson, the William
and Marguerite S. Wurzbach
Distinguished Professor in the
departments of psychiatry and
pharmacology, tells us that
chocolate contains certain
chemicals which stimulate the
pleasure centers of the brain.
So, what does it all mean? I
suppose it means that if you can
control the pleasure centers of the
brain, and override the override,
you don’t necessarily have to eat
dessert. But, why wouldn’t you
want to??
You Know It’s Getting Close to Halloween
Wal-Mart has
strangely start to blend in.
Every neighborhood starts
to look like a Spiderman
You realize that on
November 1st, there will
be a shortage of Wal-Mart
MEET
BAXTER
PET OF THE MONTH
BAXTER - M, Collie Mix, Approximately 1 year old. He was
found out in the country fending for himself. He is extremely
sweet and very shy. He has piercing gold colored eyes that will
melt your heart. Right now, Baxter is not quite sure
of his surroundings and is just getting used to everything. His
tail is always wagging and usually in a circle like a propeller. He
gets along with other dogs and children. He seems to be more
of a women’s dog--We are trying to get him used to a leash. He
does walk with a little bit of a limp but that is from a previous
injury. Baxter is neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations.
If you are interested in adopting Baxter, please contact Jennifer
at 580.699.3140 or email her at cmccullough17@live.com.
as well!
disappoint. Aromas of dark red
fruits, faint spice, and notes of
vanilla. The smells carry over

cherries and blackberry, earthen
spices, and faint traces of oak.
Has just enough sweetness to not
classify as dry, but it’s not sweet
enough to be called sweet (if that
makes sense). Medium body with
for just around $10.
for a few
decided it was time to give
it a go. The appearance is a
dark oily maduro, with minimal
velvet. Amount of smoke from
this cigar was incredible. First

sweetness that’s more akin
to cocoa. Last third develops

superb smoke. Clean, slow, cool
no corrections with a solid ash.
Highly recommend, but you’ll
For the past fourteen years, Hank Poppe
has been a professional 3-D artist and
animator.
“I got a late start in the art world,” said
Poppe. “But when retiring from the Army
I made myself a promise to do something I
had a passion for.
In 1997 Poppe started work at the US
technical courses for the Army.
“I pioneered the use of digital 3-D and
Animation at Fort Sill to meet the course
requirements while cutting the costs of
After a decade away from the art community,
Poppe began once more to create works
SCREAM QUEENS
When I think about Scream

to mind is Janet Leigh in the shower
scene in Psycho (1960). Actually,
Scream Queens have been around
for much longer, and although
the genre may have changed,
somewhat, the fact remains that
Scream Queens are still making
noise in the horror movies of today.
Back in 1927, Joan Crawford

to grace the silver screen, starring
in The Unknown. One of her more
notable roles was alongside Bette
Davis, another Scream Queen,
in What Ever Happened to Baby
Jane? (1962); the pair would also
work together on another horror
Hush…Hush Sweet Charlotte
(1964).

to look up Bette Davis, Joan
Crawford, and Janet Leigh, the
list of Scream Queens throughout
the ages has continued to grow. It

actress who was labeled the “The
Queen of All Scream Queens” was
Barbara Steele. Her breakout role
was in Black Sunday (1960), which
she landed at the young age of 21.
Although relatively young and fairly
new to acting, she was blessed with
a beautiful face, sensuous lips, and
long, dark hair. The Internet Movie
Database describes her beauty as
“strikingly lovely.” She wasn’t a very

her career. I guess what matters
most is quality, not quantity.
As for names you might
recognize (I’ll confess, I’d never
heard of Barbara Steele before
researching for this article), let’s
run down some of the more famous

them famous: Mia Farrow in
Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Linda
Blair in The Exorcist (1973), Lee
Remick in The Omen (1976), Sissy
Spacek in Carrie (1976), Shelley
Duvall in The Shining (1980),
Sigourney Weaver in Alien 3 (1992),
Drew Barrymore in Scream (1996),
Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween
H2O (1998), Jennifer Love Hewett
in I Still Know What You Did Last
Summer (1998), Sarah Michelle
Gellar in The Grudge (2004), and
Christina Ricci in Cursed (2005).
There are many, many more but
there just isn’t enough room.
The genre is still running as
strong as ever. It has even been
invaded by Reality TV. In 2008,
VH1 premiered “Scream Queens”,
a reality show pitting several
unknown actresses competing for a
role in the Saw franchise. Tanedra

landing a role in Saw VI. If you’re
a fan of the series like I am, you’ll

cleaver.
Evidently, the ladies had to deal
with bugs, gore, and stunts while
they were put through “an intense
horror-acting boot camp”. The
second season winner, Gabby
West, won a role in Saw 3D: The
Final Chapter (2010). Coincidently,
when I searched for her on IMDB
she appears as “Miscellaneous
Crew” in 3:10 to Yuma. I guess
her role wasn’t as spectacular as
she’d hoped, or perhaps she didn’t
scream loud enough.
That’s okay, because there are
plenty of good actresses who are
screaming for your nerves. You
might check out one of the movies
that I’ve mentioned, or search for

the genre isn’t going anywhere, it
will only continue to grow and get
stronger…and probably louder.
Until next time, I’ll see you at the
movies!
Lesser
Apocalypses:
A REVIEW
Shell-shocked survivors
populate the fallen world Bayard
Godsave constructs in Lesser
Apocalypses, his debut short-story
collection, but the author renders
these characters subservient to the
literal and personal destruction that
ensues throughout the work.
In fact, the reader should
instead consider the vague and
futuristic dystopian setting and
the all-powerful protagonist that
binds these
characters and
their stories
together in one
work.
Godsave
divulges how
these disparate
stories found
shelter within
one collection,
a work has
been forming
since
“Making
these
characters
respond and
behave in a
certain way
explains why
these stories wound up together
in the book. I was seeing all
these stories where characters
were responding to this big thing,
whether it was a literal apocalypse
or the collapse of a marriage,”
Godsave said.
Each vignette in Lesser
Apocalypses treads with its
own perspective toward its
own epiphany. For example,
in Predictable Trajectories,
the narrator is woman who
contemplates leaving her lover, a
man devastated after launching a
missile from inside a silo. She then
BY SARAH BREWER
delineates that guilt compels her

greater force, an illustration, like
the falling apple making known the
existence of gravity,” and considers
empathy “the real killer, the real
force behind guilt.”
This ending illuminates an
otherwise bleak and barren
landscape like the revelation Irish
modernist writer James Joyce lays
bare at the end of The Dead, his
short story from
Dubliners.
Despite its
similarities
to modernist

formation of
his novel was

the zeitgeist
Godsave
experienced
earlier in his life.
“When I
was a kid, I was
really afraid
of nuclear
holocaust. That
was in the mid
to late 1980s,
and on the news every night, the
weapon stockpiles were building
up. I think for a long time that

even though I was an adult. It still
lingered, it was there and I think
that is where these stories come
from,” Godsave said.
The Gas Mask is one story that
simultaneously comments on the
fear that epitomized this era while
exposing the terror that drives
its characters. The title refers to
a simple, yet disturbing birthday
request one young boy makes:
He asks his parents for a German
M41M gas mask and survival gear.

on neutron bombs and radiation

present because it seems like it
would be a useful item to have

the entire world. Meanwhile, his
parents withhold details about
him from each other and raise him
as separate entities as they go
through a divorce. This overruling
secrecy is eerily similar to the lie
that examines the duality of human
nature in Heart of Darkness by
Joseph Conrad.
Godsave continues to imbue
nightmarish qualities in the
italicized vignettes that serve as
interludes and form its own standalone
story.
“I would write these vignettes,
and I would try to get as creepy as
I could and write about putting a

Godsave said.
The creepy details are in this
untitled story, characters conspire
to murder each other, but never
make their reasons and motives
explicit; the reader must conjure

blanks and participate in the plot
as it transpires. They describe
a severe blow to the skull as
“soft, warm and welcoming,” and
compare humans to “cannibal
cockroaches.” Godsave evokes
and controls the mood with such
imagery, but then employs it to
shatter tension and incur a series of
disjointed feelings that precede the
denouement.
Lesser Apocalypses impacts
and haunts the reader with a
presence inherent not only in

great works of literature as well.
It’s shaping up to be a
career year for the Mormons.
The media-maligned religious

placing an adherent in the White
House, as well as a new album
dropping from its premier (and
lets face it, only) rock band-
The Killers. Since their debut
launched the band into the pop
music stratosphere in 2005, the
Killers’ choruses have soared
their way into shopping malls
and restaurants. This is because
vocalist Brandon Flowers and his
Vegas comrades specialize in
crafting material that is instantly
nostalgic, songs that sound
familiar even as you hear them

After Flowers posted a

interested in starting a rock
band, he was crestfallen when
respondent after respondent
found the his earnest keyboard
ballads hokey, with one
particularly vitriolic guitar-playing
prospect allegedly spitting,
“Good luck with your little ‘Duran-
Duran’ project,” at Flowers on
the way out. If reliving the more
epic radio moments of the 1980s
was the band’s early goal then
they have certainly succeeded
throughout their career, and
this year’s Battle Born is no
exception.
The record opens with Flesh
and Bone, which contains what
amounts to the album’s lyrical
thesis statement: You are on the
ropes, but don’t give up. This
theme is repeated again and
again throughout the album, with
strangely encouraging mantras
and misplaced Christological
imagery appearing on virtually
every song. Critics will attack the
band for this. And deservedly so.
What critics tend to ignore,
are the stellar melodies driving
those lyrics and the pristine
arena tones that guitarist Dave
Keuning inserts into instrumental
breaks. Musically, The Killers
appreciate what is obvious, and
consequently their aesthetic
tends to be diametrically
opposed to everything that
hipsters adore (at least this
year).
This is the band’s greatest
strength and most fatal
weakness, this refusal to let
fear of vapidity deter them from
taking every tune to Springsteen
levels of grandeur. Young people
only let bands get by with this
sort of thing when it’s done with
an accompanying ‘wink’ and
situated squarely in the ballpark
of irony and such winks are
conspicuously absent on Battle
Born.
Case in point: Heart of a
Girl is a power ballad in the
Tom Petty vein that employs

chorus to new heights of what
feels like pretension, but is that
an appropriate term for a band
SET PHASERS
TO SYNTH
by Keaton Lamle

Deadlines and Commitments
un-ironically features synthesizer
sounds and concludes with
reverb-laden runs on roto-toms,
an instrument unheard from in
American popular music since
Pink Floyd’s 1973 hit, Time.
The problem with all of this
excess is that like the band’s
actual hometown, all the glitter

Battle Born sometimes sounds
like the beginnings of a
triumphant night on the town,
but just as often feels like a
nauseating ride through so much
blurred neon. Despite some
legitimately great tunes, there
are a couple of moments when
the record drowns in it’s own
reminiscent exorbitance.
As is usually the case with

set of remarkably listenable rock
songs, some of which are very
good. None of Battle Born’s
are ultimately fatal, and some of
the tunes pack legitimate charm.
The Killers may be derivative, but
they are so in the most original
possible way and that is worth
something. The music press will
insist that this schtick is getting
old, but don’t listen to them.
Listen to the songs. Set reverbs
to “cathedral”. Set phasers to
“synth”. If you actually like music
from the 1980s then don’t let
anyone guilt you out of enjoying
this album.
Deadcore:
Peeling Back the
Layers
They’re known for their dramatic
live show entailing fake blood,
props and dueling metal vocalists,
but not many people know what lies
beneath the masks and makeup.
One of Lawton’s most popular
metal bands, DeadCore has built
its success of eight years on the
novelty of shocking the average
audience with costumes seemingly

many people don’t know, however,
is that the band is actually made

and even a former cheerleader.
Melissa Tehauno, female covocalist,
said she went through
many phases in high school,
including cheerleading, before she

the metal scene. A mother of three,
she now spends her days working
at a local hospital and her nights
surprising audiences.
“They see me and they think I’m
going to be the background singer
and be some singysingy person,
and I’m doing the growling,” she
said. “I like that element of surprise.”
Other members include her
husband J.R. Tehauno on drums,
Dayton Keel on guitar, Wes Morin
on guitar, Elvis Keel on samples,
Bear Bennett on bass and new covocalist,
Scott Golden.
After parting ways with former
co-vocalist Josh Katvala a few
months ago, the band said they had
to refocus, which is when Golden
was added to the mix.
DeadCore will be opening
for Devil Driver,Cancer
Bats and Six Years Dead
Sunday, October 28 at
Hella Weekend VI at
the Diamond Ballroom
in OKC. For tickets, call
“We got knocked down,” J.R.
said. “We found a way to pick up
and come back stronger.”
Golden was well-received by the
band, and fellow members say he’s
a major contribution to their new
sound,one they describe as edgier.

jammed with us, you could just see
the intensity he brought,” Bennett
said.
Golden, former vocalist for
bands Killer Whale and Green
Hysteria, said he is thriving on the
live-show theatrics that comes
with performing as a member of
DeadCore. He compares his face
paint on stage to dressing up for
Halloween as a kid.
“As a child growing up, every
kid wants to be Superman or
Batman,and they get one time
a year they can dress up and
be someone else because it’s
entertaining and fun,” he said. “We
get to do it all the time.”
Similarly, Elvis Keel said his
by Amanda Herrera
costumes help transform his
personality.
“When I wear the masks, I feel
like I’m a character,” he said.
His band mates say it’s the
energy his “character” harnesses
that they cherish, as do the fans.
“If there is something he can
swing on or jump on, he’s going to
do it,” Melissa said. “He is a ball of
life and, if he’s not there, we really
notice.”
With sibling-like bonds, and their
own small children running around
at their practices,DeadCore is
very much a family. And, much like
families evolve, so does DeadCore.
This evolution combined with
some endurance has helped them
achieve their success locally.
“Being at the right place at the
right time and getting to know the
right people who want to give us a
chance, and who see something

Melissa said. “And it’s very much
credited to our fans as well.”
Interestingly, although the
band’s name was formed with
little meaning (i.e., two columns
of words were randomly thrust
together until a union was selected)
it, too, has evolved.
“I hated the name DeadCore

something.”
When musicians Tony Bertram
and Nick Evans partnered to
perform acoustic rock covers,
they picked a name to accentuate
their softer sound, but the duo is
preparing to part ways and play on

comes to a close.
Lucille established their
presence by playing recognizable
rock at local restaurants, casinos
and parties, but according to
the band, their moniker might
disappear from the marquee after
Evans moves to New Jersey.
“We wanted something that
sounded feminine for two guys
who play pretty harmonies
with acoustic guitars,” Bertram
said. “Some people think it has
something to do with Lucille Ball
or B. B. King. I have thought about
changing the name since we
got together, so we will probably
change the name after he moves,”
Bertram said.
Bertram and Evans both
revealed their short-term and
long-term plans at a downtown
pub after playing a series of
90’s radios hits that included If
You Could Only See by Tonic,
Interstate Love Song by the Stone
Temple Pilots and When I Come
Around by Green Day.
Bertram said they would like
to perform as much as possible,
but they will refrain from booking

another guitarist.
“We need one badly and we
Lucille:
Movin’ On
but the Music
Continues
by Sarah Brewer
are searching actively,” Bertram
said. “Hopefully he can play
better than me because we need
a lead player and play melodies
behind my strumming. He does
not have to sing just yet; we can
build up his singing.”
Both sing tenor, but they
are particular when arranging
vocals so they each resonate
independently and still suit the
vision they had in mind when
selecting possible set list material.
“Most of the time, whoever
brought the song to the table is
the one who ends up singing the
lead,” Bertram explained.
Lucille vacillated between
verses when performing several
songs, but sang in unison with
steady voices and urgency during
their rendition of Lovesong by
The Cure. They said this cover is
one of their oldest and favorites
to play; their tribute was the
declaration the lyrics require.
Evans has a keen sense for
song structure he exhibited
when making some of the more
intricate solos in Like a Stone by
Audioslave and The Diary of Jane
by Breaking Benjamin pure and
strong.

because he adds in the melodic
parts where they need to be and
makes it pretty. Two guitars are
not meant to sound like they are
chugging along and distorted,”
Bertram said.
He continued to reveal how
they occasionally perform songs
outside of their genre to surprise
the crowd, like Proud Mary and
Forget You by Cee Lo Green.
“We play everything and try
to play songs that have been
embedded in music history unless
we play our originals,” Bertram
said. “We have a couple of original
songs, and we really do not play
them as much because we are not

“I am moving, too,” Evans
added.
“So this complicates things.
But I would like to do more

“We would like to record an EP
that contains four to six songs.
We have our venues where we
rotate in town, but we would love
to do festivals. Of course, having
a full band would be better, and
that is something that I would like
to do eventually as well,” Tony
said.
Evans said that he will
continue his endeavors with
music in New Jersey, but he is
not opposed to writing, recording
and sending tracks to Bertram for
long-distance collaboration-- a
scenario that has worked well
for other bands like The Postal
Service.
Lucille might be separating
in Lawton, but these versatile
musicians will perform and
continue their evolution as artists
regardless of their name and
location.
of artists: those who have made it, those struggling
to make it, and those enjoying their careers along the
way. Every so often, celebrities not known for having
musical abilities will make an attempt in the recording
industry. Some of these are seen as novelty projects,

culture legends.
Paris Hilton, the infamous socialite, pursued
a singing career with the release of her pop album
Paris in 2006. The lead single Stars Are Blind was a
moderate success, with follow-up singles failing to

DJ set during Brazil’s Pop Music Festival, was heavily
lambasted by professional DJs, including deadmau5
and Samantha Ronson.

Germany with his biggest hit Looking for Freedom in
the late ‘80s. He famously performed this song atop
the Berlin Wall the night it was torn down, signifying

pop career in German-speaking Europe did not last
long, as he returned to acting in the early ‘90s. He has
since parodied himself in this regard, most notably
as coaching the German dodgeball team in 2004’s
DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story.
Once upon a time, Lindsay Lohan was the

career. Her two pop albums, 2004’s Speak and
2005’s A Little More Raw (Personal), received mixed
reviews. Lohan’s weak vocal strength and generic
pop sound was matched by her seeming ambition,
with her autobiographical single Rumors being most
successful. After the failure of her last album, Lohan’s
career disintegrated into tabloid fodder.
Scarlett Johansson released an album
consisting mostly of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay
My Head, in 2008. Although a commercial failure, it
did receive critical praise. She would collaborate with
Pete Yorn a year later with Break Up. Mostly a vanity
project, Break Up was barely a half-hour in length;
Yorn’s brother Rick also happens to be Johansson’s
manager. She has since continued on as an actress,
most successfully portraying Black Widow in Marvel’s
The Avengers.
William Shatner, camp actor extraordinaire,
never so much had a singing career so much as an
exaggerated spoken-word career. His debut release,
The Transformed Man, was considered more as a
work of comedy than legitimate music. Throughout his
career, he would perform spoken-word versions of pop
songs for albums and television appearances, most
notably Rocket Man by Elton John. His work in this
Other celebrities, including actor Hugh Laurie
and screenwriter Seth MacFarlane, have been noted
This subversive commentary
on the materialistic society of
Seoul’s upper class is likely
lost on the general American
audience. Nonetheless, this
KPop hit has broken through
the language barrier thanks to
its “horse dance” and earworm
melody.
Sounding remarkably similar
to Ginuwine’s “My Whole Life,”
Ciara has a decent chance at
making a comeback with this
ballad. She commands her vocal
abilities just as she always had.
It’s just a shame she couldn’t
release something that sounds
more original.
England’s best downtempo trio
mostly retains the sound which
earned them critical acclaim on

the music shifts into something
more upbeat while retaining
the same drowsy vocals. The
dichotomy doesn’t quite work.
