A man in a red and white plaid shirt sits atop a broad tan horse with muscles protruding. His beaten cowboy hat sits low on his He tightly clinches a pair of reins in his left hand and a lasso in his right. The lines in his weathered neck speak his age. The horse and the man work in unison to rein in a head of livestock with a mind of its own. All of these details can be observed upon a simple glance of one of Tyler Crow’s paintings. The young man only recently graduated from Apache High School in 2007, but has already made a name for himself as a western artist. Admirers of his work expect him to go far. Still, he remains modest. “With the good Lord willing, I hope to continue to paint and get better and better everyday,” he said. His website spins the tale of a young boy with a fascination for horses, one that stayed with him through high school. Known as the guy who always had a pencil in his hand, Crow’s natural artistic talent Tyler Crow Young Western Artist Gaining Praise by Amanda Herrera won him participation in a summer painting workshop where it was further honed. His collection now consists of vibrant oils that intricately depict western scenes, mostly of cowboys in ranch settings. His charcoals are as brilliantly detailed, leaving color to the imagination. However, none of the people in Crow’s paintings He often takes trips to ranches in places like Wagoner, OK and Madison, TX to gain the inspiration for his artwork. “It’s a blessing that I get to know each of the people I paint,” Crow said. He sometimes photographs the subjects and then paints them, but also does linear sketches and paints subjects live freehand as well. With his art centered on all things cowboy, Crow has gained a unique perspective on what the term really means to him. “A good cowboy is someone like my dad or grandpa,” he said. “A cowboy is someone who takes pride in what they stand for, is a good family person, and has God in their heart.” Crow recently received the People’s Choice Award at the Bosque Arts Classic and Small Works, Great Wonders. Two pieces of his work will be featured beginning Nov. 16 in the upcoming “Small Works, Great Wonders” winter art sale at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
