This year has seen the losses of some of music’s biggest names and personalities. From singers to rappers to entertainers, icons have been lost, but Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of the Beastie Boys, died after battling throat cancer for three years on May 4. Originally a punk band, the Beastie Boys went on to become one of the most innovative groups in hip hop and rap, with irreverent lyrics and memorable music videos – most of which were directed by Yauch under the pseudonym “Nathaniel Hornblower.” Yauch was known for practicing Buddhism and advocating Tibetian independence. The Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, privately lost her battle with lung cancer on May 17. Known attendee of the legendary Studio 54 in New York of the late ‘70s. After disco’s popularity began to wane, she successfully transitioned as an R&B and pop singer. Summer converted to Christianity after struggling with drug addiction and depression, and became known for her devout outreach. Davy Jones died on February 29. He was a teen idol in the ‘60s and ‘70s as both a member of the Monkees and as a solo singer. His popularity is best highlighted in a fan’s dream of an episode of The Brady Bunch, “Getting Davy Jones.” According to USA Today, Marcia Brady says his name around tour of the United Kingdom and North America in 2011. Dick Clark, “America’s Oldest Teenager,” died of a heart attack on April 18. Clark was best known for hosting two major music-related television programs, American Bandstand and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Bandstand helped to legitimize rock and roll as an accepted music genre after its long demonization by the older generation. Rockin’ Eve became an annual special which highlighted major popular acts of the previous year as they celebrate the impending new one. Clark hosted Rockin’ Eve every year but 2005. Tributes to some of the biggest names the music industry lost this year – Don Cornelius, Etta James and Whitney Houston – will be forthcoming in the end-of-year issue of OKIE Magazine. Taylor B, an Army Brat via Fort Sill, knows that “gone” does not mean “forgotten.” Azealia Banks, “1991 EP” Grade: A Delightfully explicit, Banks and establishes her place in the rap game in her debut EP. with beats reminiscent of early ‘90s house music (hence the title), and has garnered the praise of both the mainstream and indie press. Luke Bryan, “Drunk on You” Grade: B- Southwest Oklahoma may not have “cottonwood fallin’ like snow in July,” but Okies still know how to have good times like Bryan sings about. Bryan’s intoxicating deep voice sets this song apart from what would have been a generic country pop song for anyone else. BIGBANG, “Monster” Grade: B+ Americans are currently falling for boy bands like One Direction and The Wanted for two reasons: they haven’t heard BIGBANG before, and most probably don’t speak Korean. This track is all the fun of what boy bands should be with the vocal support for it to stand apart from standard bubblegum fare. OKIE MAGAZINE www.okiemagazine.com Page 38
