Mabel Simmons, or Madea as you most likely know her, is a character in several Tyler Perry Oh yeah, he portrays her, as well. The most recent installment, Madea’s Witness Protection, which came out at the end of last month, comedy at its best. According to Tyler Perry’s plays, movies, and books, Madea is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. She was born on April 26, 1935, had many brothers (Frederick and Joe), and an illegitimate brother, Willie Humphrey, to whom she was years old, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Booker T. Washington High School, where she participated in cheerleading. She mentions in Don’t Make Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life that her parents would not allow her to go out with boys until she was seventeen or eighteen. During her adult years, Madea supported and raised her children by stripping, pole-dancing, and professional wrestling – among other things. Madea’s criminal record started at the age of 9 with a charge of Reel World by Jim Joplin petty theft, which progressed to illegal gambling at 18, check fraud, identity theft, insurance fraud (she had nine deceased husbands), assault and attempted murder, vehicle theft, smashing into other cars, and fork-lifting vehicles out of parking spaces. Although Madea was once a licensed driver, she hasn’t had a driver’s license for 38 years. In fact, Madea has so many run-ins with the law that her brother Joe calls her a “po po ho”. In “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” she is charged with criminal trespassing, reckless driving, and a broken taillight. The list of appearances for Madea starts with the play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” in 1999, which was written, directed, and starred Tyler Perry. In 2009, it was adapted into the movie of the that center around Madea: “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” (2005), “Madea’s Family Reunion” (2006), “Meet the Browns” (2008), “Madea Goes to Jail” (2009), “Madea’s Big Happy Family” (2011), and Heller, How Ya Dern? “Madea’s Witness Protection” (2012). Coincidentally, “Witness Madea franchise that is not based on a play. For the most part, people love Madea. Entertainment Weekly listed her in its “Best of 2000-2010”, saying, “Whether she’s going to jail or just opening up a can of whupass, Tyler Perry’s Madea is the profane, gun-toting granny you never had but (maybe) wish you did.” However, there are some who say that Perry is playing to black stereotypes with Madea. The most notable of critics is director Spike Lee who, in 2009, Lee compared the Madea movies to the minstrel shows of the past which satirized black people as dim-witted, lazy, superstitious and happy-go-lucky, and stated that if a white director made a movie depicting black people in the manner he would be ostracized. To this, Perry said that he makes these movies for entertainment and they shouldn’t be taken so seriously. How ever you decide to entertainment value. Personally, I think Tyler Perry is a genius; and, I hope he’ll continue to turn out Madea movies for years to come. If you’re not familiar with Madea, or you check them out. Be prepared to laugh.
