Build Your Own:
Swapping Six-Packs for Singles
You ever walk into a package
store, grocery market, or one of
those fancy import stores and see
that they have a “build your own”
six-pack deal? For me, those are
like a box of chocolates. You never
know what you’re going to get.
Recently the boss took a trip and
brought me a couple of gems back
and what better way to share them
than by reviewing them for all of you
to see?
I’m including what she brought
back and one I’ve gotten turned on
to in the past through this and will
share it with you as well. Next time
you run across the opportunity to
“build your own”, go for it. Sure it’s

nice surprises.
Pilsner -
St. Louis
Brewery
Pours a
pale straw
yellow
with great
clarity with
a frothy
white head
that clings
to the
edges and stays around a good bit,

grassy, with notes of bready grains.
Up front malt character of lightly
toasted bread, followed by well
balanced hop bitterness and herbal

brew is crisp, clean, and refreshing.

for grilling.
A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale -
Luganitas Brewing Co.
A golden-amber pour
accompanied by a thick, almost

leaving
traces of
lace. Piney
hops with
notes of
lemon
citrus,

and wheat
grain.
Tastes
follow the
nose only
more so

piney. Solid wheat grain and bready
sweetness in the back end but it

but has more IPA character to me.

The Poet
- New
Holland
Brewing
Co.
This
oatmeal
stout
pours near
black with
garnet red
edges with
a thick,

back to thick patchy lacing. Smell
is of slightly sweet malts, toasted
oats, and wafts of char. Taste is
everything I was hoping for. Upfront
sweetness of the malt and oats,

bakers chocolate. There’s some
hop bitterness but only enough to
add some balance. Finishes slightly
sweet. Smooth and creamy yet light

Xingu
Black
Beer -
Cervejaria
Sul
Brasileira

had this
brew a
while
ago after
picking one
up in Texas and I’ve since turned
on several people to it (you’re
welcome) now that it’s available
locally. This brew pours an almost
pitch black with a smallish one-

but some lace. Aromas of roasted
grain, licorice, molasses sweetness
and dark fruit. Flavors bring more
of the nose introducing some dark
cocoa and caramel with a slight

dry. Light body makes it a good
intro to those wanting to delve into
darker brews without crossing over
into porters and stouts...yet.
