HAPPY If I say, “July Holidays”, everyone knows about Independence Day; the day for remembering where this country came from, and how far we’ve gotten. It’s a day for spending time with family and friends, and hotdogs. Well, this year, I’m not going to go into all of that. Instead, I’ll be sharing some of the more unusual holidays. July 2, 1947 is a well known date. That is, if you’re a UFO believer. On this date, Mac Brazel, a rancher who lived northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, discovered wreckage of a metallic object on his ranch. He contacted the military who came out, investigated, removed the wreckage was from an later rescinded the reports leading to speculation of a massive government cover-up. July 2 is actually World UFO Day; a day when UFO believers seek to get governments to “fess up” to the existence of UFOs. Eyes Day, and there are two reasons to celebrate. First, it celebrates diversity of eye color. YELLOW 17 DAY Mine are blue, yours may be green, or brown, or perhaps grey or hazel. Second, it recognizes a condition called heterochromia, which is a trait where people perhaps one brown and one blue. David Bowie, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Walken all have heterochromia. When I came across this next one I wasn’t sure what to think, but July 17th is National Yellow Pig Day. While National Pig Day (March 1st) recognizes the domesticated pigs, National Yellow Pig Day is a mathematician’s holiday celebrating yellow pigs and the number 17. The Yellow Pig was the brainstorm of Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly in the early 1960s. They were students at Princeton University, studying mathematics. While the two were listing interesting properties of the number 17, the yellow pig was born. Yeah, I didn’t get it either. National Junk Food Day is an PIG opportunity to eat your favorite junk food – without the guilt. Dietitians will say that junk food is food that lacks nutritional value. On Junk food Day you can eat any food that you’d like, just remember that the next day you have to go back to eating healthy. Aside from being my birthday, July 27, 2012 marks the beginning of the Summer Olympic Games. While not a national holiday, or a holiday at all, it marks the beginning of the 30th Olympiad. This year, London, England will host the Summer Olympics, bringing together some of the top athletes from around the world. The opening ceremonies are typically a very special and very big event. The whole world will be tuning in to watch the festivities, as well as the competitions being held for the following two weeks. I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick run-down of some of the more unusual holidays and observances. Even if you choose not to celebrate any of them, take a day and make it your own holiday.
