Dwight Cope:
Mayor on a Motorcycle
by Tammie Ward-Sunday
Dwight Cope, was born in
Georgia, raised in Altus, Oklahoma
and eventually landed his
motorcycle in Medicine
Park, OK.
While still
a child,
Dwight’s
dad would
take his
family on trips
to Kentucky
to visit his
grandmother.
On the way back
to Altus his dad
would drive the
route of Highway
49 while Dwight
pressed his nose
to the car window
gazing upon the
small cobblestone
town of MP.
Dwight’s curiosity
of the cobblestone
village could not be
entertained, it had to
be experienced.
Dwight has lived in
MP for 21 years. Most
of his adult life has
been dedicated to the
rebirth of what he once
considered a dirty, little,
lost town. He and some of his
friends took their own vehicles,
used their own equipment and

the venture of cleaning up what he
believed could be a place to raise
his children. His dreams led him to
MP and for the last seven years,
he has organized
many needed
and wanted attractions.
The road to being mayor started
on the Planning and Preservation
Committee and ended up on the
Town Board. The Board appointed
him to the Mayor position in April,
2005. Many changes have taken
place over the last few years which
have enhanced exactly what
Dwight had in his mind. He built
a stage in the middle of town with
the help of his friends who shared
the same interest. He changed the
sleeping settlement into a swinging
arena for artists and entertainers.
One might say, “He brought life
back into the town”.
When Dwight became Mayor, he
seized the position with pride. His
dream was to create and maintain
a community where he could
form a clean, safe environment
for his children to live. He had a
vision to enhance the existing
unique village persona while
incorporating entertainment.
He is living his dream.
Interest of entertainers
is growing because of
the town’s newly formed
attractions. The 6th annual
Mayor’s Blues Ball proves
to be a success as phone
calls come from bands
across Oklahoma,
Texas and surrounding
states wanting a
chance to entertain
the growing number
of people attending
the event. Dwight
seldom disappoints
by turning a band or
entertainer away from
a “Gig”. MP is the
host of the annual
Mayor’s Blues Ball,
Red Dirt Festival,
Park Stomp, Flute
Festival and other types
of entertainment throughout the
entire year. Currently there is talk
of a Barbeque contest in the near
future. Booth space for vendors,
along with other information about
the area, can be viewed at www.
medicinepark.com. Some of the
vendors also furnish entertainment
as noticed last year as a merchant
woman was twirling several hula
OKIE MAGAZINE www.okiemagazine.com Page 4
hoops around her neck and
body. You can guess what she
was selling. These entertainment
changes have been made
possible by the Oklahoma Arts
Council, Medicine Park
Economic
Development
Committee and
the friendly
Motorcycle
Mayor.
MP
continues
to host the
annual “Polar
Bear Plunge”.
A parade
starts at the
Park Tavern
with grand
master
Santa
Claus
leading
any
willing
participants across an arched
bridge to the edge of the icy waters
of Bath Lake. Santa starts the
countdown…5….4….3….2….1….
everyone in all sorts of attire jump
into the fridgid water. The usual
scene is-- most do not stay in the
water very long. Dwight jumps!
He is involved in most, if not all,
activities. And, yes, his motorcycle
is parked at the local tavern. This is
one of the scenes played out every
February.
The once free swimming area
“Bath Lake” has changed for the
better by charging a small fee. The

revenue which goes back into the
preservation of keeping the area
clean and safe by prepping the
bottom of the vicinity with a layer of
small rocks and removing harmful
cans and bottles (discovered when
the area is drained). If one goes
to swim often, he/she will probably

swimming-hole monitor sitting in a
golf cart.
Dwight has many plans for the
future of the Park. He is currently
working on several ventures to
enhance
Medicine Park in the beginning.
enhance com
the visitor
experience. One project
will provide guests with primitive
camping areas. Lake Elmer
Thomas Recreational Area gave
the town three cabins when they
revamped their camping facilities.
These cabins, along with primitive
camping areas, will provide those
who love the outdoors with a
unique happening. Dwight is just
getting started. His next plan for
the future is to complete an 11
acre zoo and aquarium which will
be located on the South side of
highway 49 next to the entrance
of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife
Refuge. This new project should be
open by next spring and will lead
into the opening of the Highway 49
Corridor (much needed widening of
the highway).
Dwight shared information
concerning the late Edna
Hennessee. Edna was
instrumental in the snoozing town’s
progress when she was able to
annex several small businesses.
“The tax revenue from those
businesses and other welcomed
commerce are what maintain new
gr growth in our town”, Dwight said
wi with a smile. He continues to
allow and promote
new commerce
to consider MP
when looking for
a place to open a
company.
When asked
about crime in
the town, Dwight
provided a witty but
honest answer, “We
have an occasional
domestic squabble
and once in awhile a
burglary but our main
burglar just passed

tickets are discouraged
by Dwight because the
town’s revenue leans
on tax revenues for the
major part of the town’s
income. His words are, “If you get
a speeding ticket, you will have
to pay it but you can arrange a
payment plan.”
Dwight sees MP to be a
“Vortex”, drawing in a certain type
of people (usually the artist or

curiosity). He says, “The town
seems to suck people into it”. He
is adamant about preserving the
colorful history and once decadent
character of this small town. He
loves his home, the place he raised
his kids, the place of his childhood
dreams and the people who live
there. Dwight encourages visitors
to come and enjoy a taste of what
he calls, “The town with a soul of its
own”. Amazing….a town Mayor on
a Motorcycle…..Dwight Cope.
There are thousands of
coupons available everywhere.
You just have to look in the right
places. To get started collecting

know how many products you
want to buy or stock up on. You
should also have a good idea
of the number of times you buy
this product per year. Follow the

while on sale and use a coupon
with that sale item. This will give
you the most for your money.
You will need to know how
many of each coupon you need
to last you 6 months or a year.
For example, if you buy XXX
brand of shampoo, and you
use 12 bottles per year,
you know you need 12
coupons. This is called
“stockpiling.”
If you use one brand
of shampoo, then look
at that manufactures
website. Almost all high
volume producers of
consumable products have
websites. Check the website for

or “coupons.” Most can only be
printed once every 3-6 months.
You can spend quite a bit of time
searching for one coupon at a

the coupon you need. There

Facebook fan pages for items.
While online you should
check your local grocery stores
sites. Most will not only their sale
items but printable coupons.
The Frugal Coupon Wife:
Saving Money Makes Cents
by Sheila Robinson
Where to
Find the
Coupons
You Need
Some are in store coupons,
and some are manufacturer
coupons. What I like about
in store coupons is you can
stack an in store coupon with
the same like manufacturer
coupon. By combining two

be getting double the savings
or even better savings if you
store “doubles” manufacturer
coupons.
Take a look at your pantry
before your shopping trip.
Many packages have printed
coupons on or inside the packs
themselves. By getting in the
habit of checking before you
throw any container out, you will

already purchase on a regular
basis.
Check out online message
boards or forums that others

frugal shoppers and many will
even swap with you. They may
not purchase the same type
of product as you do, so they
are willing to trade. Keep all
the coupons that you do not
intend to use out of your
Sunday paper for trading
purposes. There are
coupon clipping services
online that you can use.
Whilst selling coupons
is illegal; charging for the
time spent to collect and
organize the coupons “is”
legal.
Do not forget the phone

many coupons for restaurants,
car washes, and laundromats.
There are always great coupons
for saving at local stores and
services inside the phone
book and many times they go
unclipped. Many magazines
have coupons. ALL YOU
HAPPY
If I say, “July Holidays”,
everyone knows about
Independence Day; the day for
remembering where this country
came from, and how far we’ve
gotten. It’s a day for spending
time with family and friends,

and hotdogs. Well, this year, I’m
not going to go into all of that.
Instead, I’ll be sharing some of the
more unusual holidays.
July 2, 1947 is a well known
date. That is, if you’re a UFO
believer. On this date, Mac
Brazel, a rancher who lived
northwest of Roswell, New
Mexico, discovered wreckage
of a metallic object on his ranch.
He contacted the military who
came out, investigated, removed

the wreckage was from an

later rescinded the reports leading
to speculation of a massive
government cover-up. July 2 is
actually World UFO Day; a day
when UFO believers seek to get
governments to “fess up” to the
existence of UFOs.

Eyes Day, and there are two
reasons to celebrate. First, it
celebrates diversity of eye color.
YELLOW
17
DAY
Mine are blue, yours may be
green, or brown, or perhaps grey
or hazel. Second, it recognizes a
condition called heterochromia,
which is a trait where people

perhaps one brown and one blue.
David Bowie, Jane Seymour,
and Christopher Walken all have
heterochromia.
When I came across this
next one I wasn’t sure what
to think, but July 17th is
National Yellow Pig Day. While
National Pig Day (March 1st)
recognizes the domesticated
pigs, National Yellow Pig Day
is a mathematician’s holiday
celebrating yellow pigs and the
number 17. The Yellow Pig was
the brainstorm of Michael Spivak
and David C. Kelly in the early
1960s. They were students at
Princeton University, studying
mathematics. While the two were
listing interesting properties of the
number 17, the yellow pig was
born. Yeah, I didn’t get it either. If
you can make sense of this, and
you think you can explain it to me,
email me at jrjoplin@gmail.com.
While some people celebrate
Junk Food Day every day, the
actually holiday is July 21st.
National Junk Food Day is an
PIG

opportunity to eat your favorite
junk food – without the guilt.
Dietitians will say that junk food is
food that lacks nutritional value.
On Junk food Day you can eat any
food that you’d like, just remember
that the next day you have to go
back to eating healthy.
Aside from being my birthday,
July 27, 2012 marks the
beginning of the Summer Olympic
Games. While not a national
holiday, or a holiday at all, it
marks the beginning of the 30th
Olympiad. This year, London,
England will host the Summer
Olympics, bringing together
some of the top athletes from
around the world. The opening
ceremonies are typically a very
special and very big event. The
whole world will be tuning in to
watch the festivities, as well as the
competitions being held for the
following two weeks.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this
quick run-down of some of the
more unusual holidays and
observances. Even if you choose
not to celebrate any of them,
take a day and make it your own
holiday. Relax, have fun, and
enjoy the company of friends and
family.
Jimmy Jack
Whitaker’s
story
by Amanda Herrera
Editor’s Note: As we were going to
press we learned that Jimmy Jack
Whitaker won the AGAPE Festival’s
2012 Songwriter of the Year award
in recognition of his talent and
songwriting. Congratulations!
Jimmy Jack Whitaker has
become all too familiar with the
stretch of highway he travels
from Nashville, Tennessee to
southwest Oklahoma. Nashville is
where he laid the foundation for
his songwriting career, southwest
Oklahoma is where his family
resides. The award-winning
songwriter who grew up in Snyder
spent the beginning of his summer
in Lawton performing a series of
intimate local shows. However, he’ll
soon hit the highway again, in true
musician fashion, embarking on an
intimate summer tour where he’ll
play churches, festivals, prisons,
nursing homes and just about
everywhere in between.
Whitaker spends a lot of time
alone, as he’s virtually a one-man
show who travels from one gig to
the next. With him, a collection
of personal photo albums full of
images taken during his time spent
with music legends, like Charlie
Daniels, Willie Nelson, or his
mentor, legendary songwriter Gary
S. Paxton, just to name a few.
Whitaker plays several
instruments and possesses
tremendous vocal talent, but refers
to himself as a songwriter foremost.
Despite several accolades dating
back to the 1970s, he says he
is most proud when other artists
record his tunes. He’s had many
of his songs covered from several
genres of music.
“It is a great feeling for someone
to want to cut one of your songs,”
Whitaker said.
Whitaker has an extensive
musical bio and spent time playing
the music circuit in California, but
experienced most of his success
Songwriting tips from Jimmy Jack:

the craft.”

singers, pickers, or songwriters. The ones
who make it are the ones who people
want to go see and hear—the ones with
charisma.”

important.”

rewrites.”

good the song is.”

anything.”

line. You have to throw the great song out
there if you want to catch success.”
in Nashville with his collection of
country and gospel tunes.
Whitaker says music has

freedom, allowing him to pursue a
nontraditional career.

said. “I go to bed when I want, I get
up when I want and I’m friends with
who I want.”
Although his musical career
hasn’t brought him extensive
monetary riches, he says it’s
provided him with a greater wealth,
one of a spiritual nature.
“Music opens the heart,”
Whitaker said. “I go into prisons and
I’m able to see that.” “The music
is what opens the heart, and then
whatever you feed into that heart
[the message] once it is open will
determine your outcome.”
Because of the spirituality

spends much of his time writing and
performing messages of hope, and
has several causes he cares deeply
about. Whitaker supports School
for Life Ministry in Gary, West
Virginia, where McDowell County is
the poorest county in the US, The
Rock House Ministries
in Rockford, Illinois which
feeds more than 100
inner city kids, and Global
Missions in Rogersville,
Tennessee. He performs
for Christian biker groups,
military Veterans events,
churches, jails and
prisons, nursing homes,
and street ministries.
The traveling
songwriter says his plan
is to continue to spend his
time on the road, writing
music, and answering a
greater calling.
“I want my legacy to be

everything I do and that
any gift I had was coming
from the lord,” Whitaker
said.
Each year millions of tech
enthusiasts await the most
important press conferences of the

June’s Electronic Entertainment

of consumers for the upcoming
year. Especially for the “Big Three,”
Microsoft,
Nintendo of
America and
Sony Computer
Entertainment,
this hour-anda-half
company
pep talk will be
talked about for
years to come.
Both the
media and
consumers
remember
the glorious
moments as
well as the
painfully sour
ones.
Last year, Sony began its
conference with an apology.
The PlayStation Network outage

the apology became the clear
indication of “we screwed up.”
This year, Nintendo had
every right to steal the show.
Last summer, with the reveal of
the company’s next-generation
console, the Wii U, all NOA
President Reggie Fils-Aime had to
do was make audiences believe
that this upcoming console is the
future.
Nintendo’s Wii is the best selling
current-generation console, yet its
slowdown in sales and negative
reputation from a large cut of core
gamers is alienating the view of all
consumers.
Casual gamers and families
need to be able to believe that
spending money on a Wii U,
especially in this economy, will be
an investment with an immediate

Core gamers must believe that
the Wii U is capable of delivering
an experience that surpasses the
current generation’s technology
and that their technological
investment won’t collect dust, as
many Wii’s have.
Nintendo’s show did not do that.
Each show has a big reveal, one
that ignites excitement, writes its
own headlines and becomes the
talk of the industry.
This year, Microsoft had a reveal
from the XBox 360’s signature
franchise, Halo 4. Sony began with
the anticipated announcement
from the developer of criticallyacclaimed
Heavy Rain and ended
with one of the most-discussed and
speculated titles, The Last of Us.
Nintendo had Pikmin.
While the reveal of a new Mario
and Pikmin game for the Wii U is
not necessarily bad, nothing was
put on display to include a “wow”
factor that is yearned for in each
conference.
Third-party developers could
have saved the day, but a majority
of Nintendo’s big hitters will be
titles that are over
a year old, such as

Batman: Arkham
Asylum.
Right now, the
common consumer
won’t see a need to
get a fancier “Wii,”
and core gamers
don’t see a reason
to buy a system
that is expected to
be a let-down.
Without the
proper sales
pitch, the press
conference only

console exists.
However, that existence
currently has a high probably of
dissapearing unless a strong,

into play, creating the consumer
atmosphere necessary to be the
“must-own” holiday gift.
I have high hopes for the Wii
U and the future for the oldest
of the Big Three. It is possible
for the gaming giant to make the
comeback that it desperately needs
in the gaming industry.
Sadly, as of right now, Nintendo
is doing it all wrong.
announcements, visit www.
Build Your Own:
Swapping Six-Packs for Singles
You ever walk into a package
store, grocery market, or one of
those fancy import stores and see
that they have a “build your own”
six-pack deal? For me, those are
like a box of chocolates. You never
know what you’re going to get.
Recently the boss took a trip and
brought me a couple of gems back
and what better way to share them
than by reviewing them for all of you
to see?
I’m including what she brought
back and one I’ve gotten turned on
to in the past through this and will
share it with you as well. Next time
you run across the opportunity to
“build your own”, go for it. Sure it’s

nice surprises.
Mabel Simmons, or Madea
as you most likely know her, is a
character in several Tyler Perry

Oh yeah, he portrays her, as
well. The most recent installment,
Madea’s Witness Protection, which
came out at the end of last month,

comedy at its best.
According to Tyler Perry’s
plays, movies, and books,
Madea is originally from New
Orleans, Louisiana. She was
born on April 26, 1935, had many
brothers (Frederick and Joe),
and an illegitimate brother, Willie
Humphrey, to whom she was

years old, she moved to Atlanta,
Georgia. She attended Booker T.
Washington High School, where
she participated in cheerleading.
She mentions in Don’t Make

Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited
Commentaries on Love and Life
that her parents would not allow her
to go out with boys until she was
seventeen or eighteen. During her
adult years, Madea supported and
raised her children by stripping,
pole-dancing, and professional
wrestling – among other things.
Madea’s criminal record started
at the age of 9 with a charge of
Reel
petty theft, which
progressed to illegal
gambling at 18,
check fraud, identity
theft, insurance
fraud (she had
nine deceased
husbands), assault
and attempted
murder,
vehicle theft,
smashing into
other cars,
and fork-lifting
vehicles out
of parking
spaces.
Although
Madea
was once
a licensed
driver, she
hasn’t had
a driver’s
license for
38 years. In
fact, Madea has so many run-ins
with the law that her brother Joe
calls her a “po po ho”. In “Diary of a
Mad Black Woman” she is charged
with criminal trespassing, reckless
driving, and a broken taillight.
The list of appearances for
Madea starts with the play “I Can
Do Bad All By Myself” in 1999,
which was written, directed, and
starred Tyler Perry. In 2009, it was
adapted into the movie of the

that center around Madea: “Diary
of a Mad Black Woman” (2005),
“Madea’s Family Reunion” (2006),
“Meet the Browns” (2008), “Madea
Goes to Jail” (2009), “Madea’s
Big Happy Family” (2011), and
Heller,
How Ya Dern?
“Madea’s Witness Protection”
(2012). Coincidentally, “Witness

Madea franchise that is not based
on a play.
For the most part, people love
Madea. Entertainment Weekly
listed her in its “Best of 2000-2010”,
saying, “Whether she’s going to jail
or just opening up a can
of whupass, Tyler Perry’s
Madea is the profane,
gun-toting granny you
never had but (maybe)
wish you did.” However,
there are some who say
that Perry is playing to
black stereotypes with
Madea.
The most notable
of critics is director
Spike Lee who, in 2009,

Lee compared the Madea
movies to the minstrel
shows of the past which
satirized black people
as dim-witted, lazy,
superstitious and happy-go-lucky,
and stated that if a white director
made a movie depicting black
people in the manner he would
be ostracized. To this, Perry said
that he makes these movies for
entertainment and they shouldn’t
be taken so seriously.
How ever you decide to

entertainment value. Personally, I
think Tyler Perry is a genius; and,
I hope he’ll continue to turn out
Madea movies for years to come. If
you’re not familiar with Madea, or

you check them out. Be prepared
to laugh. Can I get a “Halleluyer!” or
a “Praise da Lort!”?
An
in
about & by Jordan Godlewski
t some point in everyone’s life they get burned out
and feel that they have lost their way. That happened to me. I
started to feel that I was becoming stagnant and had no clear
path to the things that I wanted to achieve. I felt a change of
scenery was in order. Now, to bring you up to speed, I had
signed up for yoga and art retreat in Provence, the South of
France for two weeks over a year ago and the timing could
not have been any better. I really didn’t have any expectations
about the other people on the retreat, the only thing I knew
was I was the only male in a group of eighteen females. The
only real expectation I had was not to come home with an
impressive art journal since I was deprived of creativity and
connection. As the trip progressed I found myself visiting with
a different group of ladies each day and was absolutely blown
away by these individuals. I was surrounded by creative,
intellectual people who were all very much accomplished in

to put into words when you feel such a connection with a group
of people who have the ability to give you that recharge you
are in need of. It was at this moment I thought, maybe you

scenery. Maybe all you need is to connect with new individuals
and experience the synergy that is created when like-minded
individuals interact. As the week went on I found myself
wanting to work more and more on my art journal because I
simply couldn’t remember all the ideas I was constantly having.
I soon found myself drawing inspiration
not only from the lessons being taught by the
leader of the group but also by the lessons
I was learning from simply opening up and
contributing to conversations. I have now
learned to never pass up an opportunity to
meet someone new and take a moment to learn
about them. I’m truly grateful for the chance
to meet so many wonderful people on this trip
and I can’t wait to go back with everyone again!
This year has seen the losses of some of music’s
biggest names and personalities. From singers to
rappers to entertainers, icons have been lost, but

Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of the
Beastie Boys, died after battling throat cancer for
three years on May 4. Originally a punk band, the
Beastie Boys went on to become one of the most
innovative groups in hip hop and rap, with irreverent
lyrics and memorable music videos – most of which
were directed by Yauch under the pseudonym
“Nathaniel Hornblower.” Yauch was known for
practicing Buddhism and advocating Tibetian
independence.
The Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, privately
lost her battle with lung cancer on May 17. Known

attendee of the legendary Studio 54 in New York

of the late ‘70s. After disco’s popularity began to
wane, she successfully transitioned as an R&B and
pop singer. Summer converted to Christianity after
struggling with drug addiction and depression, and
became known for her devout outreach.
Davy Jones died on February 29. He was a teen
idol in the ‘60s and ‘70s as both a member of the
Monkees and as a solo singer. His popularity is
best highlighted in a fan’s dream of an episode of
The Brady Bunch, “Getting Davy Jones.” According
to USA Today, Marcia Brady says his name around

tour of the United Kingdom and North America in
2011.
Dick Clark, “America’s Oldest Teenager,” died of
a heart attack on April 18. Clark was best known
for hosting two major music-related television
programs, American Bandstand and Dick Clark’s
New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Bandstand helped to
legitimize rock and roll as an accepted music genre
after its long demonization by the older generation.
Rockin’ Eve became an annual special which
highlighted major popular acts of the previous year
as they celebrate the impending new one. Clark
hosted Rockin’ Eve every year but 2005.
Tributes to some of the biggest names the music
industry lost this year – Don Cornelius, Etta James
and Whitney Houston – will be forthcoming in the
end-of-year issue of OKIE Magazine.
know how to have good times
like Bryan sings about. Bryan’s
intoxicating deep voice sets this
song apart from what would
have been a generic country
pop song for anyone else.
BIGBANG, “Monster” Grade: B+
Americans are currently
falling for boy bands like One
Direction and The Wanted for
two reasons: they haven’t heard
BIGBANG before, and most
probably don’t speak Korean.
This track is all the fun of what
boy bands should be with the
vocal support for it to stand
apart from standard bubblegum
fare.
