The Olympic service was begun in 1803
and delivered to the Tuileries Palace on
21 August 1807 on the occasion of the
marriage banquet of Napoleon’s brother,
Jérôme Bonaparte, the new King of
Westphalia. The service of 140 pieces was
decorated with scenes depicting the lives
and loves of the Olympian gods. In order
to cement his alliance with Russia after
the Treaty of Tilsit in July 1807, Napoleon
presented the entire Olympic service to
Tsar Alexander as a diplomatic gift.
