Passed into law on 29 Floréal, Year X<br />

(19 May 1802), the Legion <strong>of</strong> Honour was<br />

part <strong>of</strong> Napoleon’s vision for a newly ordered<br />

France that included his reorganisation <strong>of</strong><br />

judicial and civic administration.<br />

During the First Empire four separate types<br />

<strong>of</strong> Legion <strong>of</strong> Honour insignia were issued,<br />

distinguished by the absence or presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> an Imperial crown, variants in the<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> this crown and the addition<br />

or omission <strong>of</strong> balls on the points <strong>of</strong> the stars.<br />
