Gift of Princess Louis de Croÿ, 1931 Inv. M.M. 40.47.8024
A large portrait painted by François Gérard
of Madame Bonaparte, the future Empress
Josephine, was featured at the Paris Salon
of 1801. With Napoleon now ruling as
France’s First Consul, Josephine was in
1801 very much in the public eye as wife
of the new head of government. Hung in
the Council Room at Malmaison during
the Empire, Gérard’s painting is conserved
today in the Hermitage Museum in
St Petersburg. In 1806, Napoleon ordered
this tapestry to be woven after Gérard’s
portrait. Eight Gobelins weavers worked
to create this masterpiece.
