The First Consul’s sabre, known as the<br />

This sabre was probably taken from a<br />

Mameluke military <strong>of</strong>ficer during one <strong>of</strong><br />

the early battles in Napoleon’s Egyptian<br />

Campaign. Its blade has an ivory hilt with<br />

finger holds. The sheath, <strong>of</strong> green velvet<br />

with silk trim, is adorned with stylized plant<br />

motifs fashioned from chased copper.<br />
