N 107 This ring was worn by Josephine on 2 December 1804, the day of her coronation as Empress. Originally set with a ruby that was drawn, like the emerald in Napoleon’s now lost coronation ring, from the surviving French Crown Jewels, the ring was blessed by Pope Pius VII on the day of the coronation. The ruby in Josephine’s ring – replaced at some point with a garnet – was symbolic of joy, and the emerald in Napoleon’s ring symbolised divine revelation.
