Fondation Napoléon, Paris
Acquisition 2002 inv. 1164
Executed not long after the Battle of Marengo,
this is the first painted representation
celebrating that victory. It does not seem to
have been official propaganda, but rather
a private initiative on the part of artists who
wanted to secure the good grace of the
victor and new ruler of France. The overall
composition and the detail of the uniforms
can be attributed to Lefèvre, while the rather
inaccurate portrait heads are by Boze,
and the spirited horses by Vernet.
