Side-scan sonar was used to search the reef face to a depth of 610 m (2,000 ft) (King et al
2001). A remotely operated vehicle was available to examine anything found by the sidescan
sonar. The side-scan sonar fish hit the reef and broke halting the side-scan sonar survey.
New England Aquarium (2006) presented a predicted bathymetric map of Nikumaroro
(Gardner) (Figure III-1.29).
