This charming town, considered one of
the state’s friendliest, offers an assortment
of attractions to visitors. Stroll
through the quaint downtown area or
cross the highway to try your luck at
the Kootenai River Inn Casino. This lush
valley, only 1,800 feet in elevation, is
brimming with fields of wheat, oats,
barley, and hops for brewing beer.
Those looking for an amazing mountain
biking or hiking experience will be
thrilled to find more than 300 miles of
trails crisscrossing the three mountain
ranges that encircle the valley. Be
sure to take a side trip on Highway 2
over the Moyie River Bridge to see the
misty, 60-foot-high Moyie Falls. Wildlife
watchers and photographers can
enjoy the renowned Kootenai National
Wildlife Refuge. Watch for elk, moose,
deer, eagles, and numerous species of
small mammals and birds.

Sandpoint
Set on the northwestern shore of Lake
Pend Oreille, Sandpoint is an artsy
resort town with galleries, shops,
charming restaurants, and Pend Oreille
Winery, offering a bistro, gift shop,
and wine tasting. It is also home to
Coldwater Creek, the upscale northcountry
clothing catalog. Lake Pend
Oreille—so deep it has a naval base
for submarine training—offers ideal
fishing, boat cruises, and camping
along its forested shores. The lake is
popular with anglers searching for giant
Kamloops, a freshwater species of lake
trout that can weigh in at 10 pounds.
Summer is the perfect time to lounge
beside the water with a cool drink or
take in performances at the Festival at
Sandpoint, which gathers an eclectic
mix of established and up-and-coming
musicians. Be sure to try Idaho’s
signature fruit, the huckleberry, at the
