Nez Perce Visitor Center and Museum.
Riggins Rodeo
Salmon River
« An appreciation for beauty has become an obsession »
» The Nez Perce Tribe’s history, culture,
and language are woven tightly into the
fabric of this area, and Lewis and Clark
owe their survival to the Nez Perce
during an early Idaho winter.
» Missionaries followed Lewis & Clark,
and the region is steeped in their
contributions as well. The First Indian
Presbyterian Church in Kamiah and
St. Joseph’s Mission in Lewiston are
open to visitors. The museum at the
Monastery of St. Gertrude’s in Cottonwood
houses a rich collection of the
history, artifacts, and memories of the
entire region, plus it hosts a Raspberry
Festival each August.
» You can find botanical festivals
celebrating Hempfest (Moscow),
the Locust Blossom (Kendrick), the
Dogwood Festival (Lewiston), and the
Blackberry Festival (Juliaetta). You’ll
see the pastoral nature of this region in
its many farmers’ markets and harvest
festivals.
» Lewiston is tucked in a valley that
shelters it from temperatures its more
mountainous neighbors experience. As
a result, Dogwood trees grace the town,
Looking for a great place for outdoor recreation, unique festivals,
and a superb quality of life? North central Idaho offers a variety of
activities, events, and diverse cultural opportunities.
April with music, arts, crafts, sports,
and spectator events.
» The wealth of museums in this region
includes the J. Howard Bradbury
Memorial Logging Museum in Pierce
and the Lochsa Historical Ranger
Station Museum near Powell. Horse
lovers can’t miss the Appaloosa
Museum & Heritage Center in Moscow.
The history of this uniquely Idaho breed
is inseparable from the Nez Perce Tribe.
Another treasure is the Idaho Forest
Fire Museum, which includes displays
about the great fires of 1910.
» A special gem is the Jack O’Connor
Hunting Heritage & Educational Center
tucked in the beautiful Hells Gate State
Park outside of Lewiston. Longtime
readers of Outdoor Life will remember
the sense of adventure that came alive
in his many writings that inspired,
informed, and educated outdoorsmen
and hunters about wildlife conservation
and modern wildlife management.
» Moscow is imbued with all of the
energy, excitement, and culture a
large university can bring when the
River Dance Lodge
University of Idaho is in session.
Vandal athletics and the Lionel
Hampton Jazz Festival fill the nearby
hotels. On campus, you’ll experience a
banquet for the senses at the spectacular
63-acre Arboretum & Botanical
Garden. Take in the Great Performance
Series—attend live theater at the
