Moscow
It’s oKay,
your day planner will be fine
Golden wheat fields, bright yellow
canola flower fields, and emerald
green pea fields are all set against a
vivid blue sky in the rolling landscape
surrounding Moscow, home to the
University of Idaho. The original layout
of the University’s campus was designed
by the Olmsted brothers, who also
designed New York’s Central Park, and
made it one of the west’s more picturesque
campuses with its Gothic-style
administration building as the centerpiece.
Music lovers, take note of the
Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival on campus
each February.
The charming city of Moscow is an
eclectic mix of small-town friendliness
and college-town energy. The downtown
area, full of shops and restaurants, is
adjacent to tree-lined neighborhoods
where children play and families gather.
Enjoy a trip to the Camas Prairie Winery
tasting room or the local farmers
market. Plan a visit to the Appaloosa
Museum, which celebrates the breed’s
noble history with the Nez Perce Tribe.
When snow blankets the area, there are
several good local areas for skiing and
snowboarding. But, if snowmobiling
is more your style, there are miles and
miles of trails to scratch that itch for
wintertime fun.
Timber Country
From Moscow, meander through rolling
fields and past beautiful mountain
meadows up to timber country to see
magnificent standing giants of cedar,
tamarack, and fir trees. Take Highways
3, 6, and 8 through the small towns of
Princeton, Harvard, Santa, and Troy.
Take a short hike to Elk Creek Falls near
Elk River, classic tributary falls set in a
peaceful, shaded gorge. The mountains
offer great camping in the summer,
hunting in the fall, and perfect terrain
for winter snowmobiling.
Lewiston
At the confluence of the Clearwater and
Snake rivers, Lewiston is the city at the
lowest elevation in Idaho at only 738
feet about sea level. Lewiston’s location
is an ideal base to use when exploring
north central Idaho, with many lodging
and dining options. Walk or bike the
riverside trail in Hells Gate State Park,
then visit the Lewis and Clark Discovery
Center to learn more about the explorers’
travails in the region. Lewiston has
a quaint downtown area with shaded
streets, historic buildings, and the campus
of Lewis-Clark State College, home
to numerous regional events.
