If you are a history buff, there is a lot to
see in north central Idaho. More than 200
years ago, President Jefferson’s Corps of
Discovery first set foot on what was to
become Idaho. Lewis and Clark were awed
by the seemingly endless mountains, the
deep canyons, and the rushing rivers that
they found here on their epic journey west.
Today, you can write your own history by
visiting this most pristine and unspoiled
portion of Lewis and Clark’s trail and learn
about their journey. You can walk in their
footsteps, experience the culture and history
of the Nez Perce Tribe, and gaze upon
the largest wilderness area in the Lower
48 states. Meander along Highway 12,
the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway that
parallels the wild and scenic Clearwater
and Lochsa rivers from Lewiston all the
way to the Montana border. Book a raft trip
on any of the region’s six rivers, including
the Main Salmon—Idaho’s famous “River
of No Return.” Roar over forbidding rapids
in the deepest canyon in North America,
Hells Canyon, on a jet boat. Or simply cruise
through the photogenic countryside of the
Palouse, with its colorful fields and amber
waves of grain. Near Cottonwood, watch
for the giant beagle, which is Idaho’s most
unique bed and breakfast inn, Dog Bark
Park. In the winter, check out the surrounding
ski areas for scenic winter fun and
friendly hospitality. In north central Idaho,
it’s easy to travel at a relaxed, comfortable
pace and absorb the natural beauty, while
learning about a rich, diverse history.
