If Idaho is a gem of a state, then Sun Valley/Ketchum is its crown jewel. Surrounded by
mountains, rivers, and lakes, central Idaho beckons those whose favorite waking hours
are those spent outdoors.
» Venture just steps from your hotel to
fly fish on the Big Wood River or head
further south to Picabo and try your
luck at Silver Creek Preserve, Hemingway’s
favorite trout stream. A stunning
drive east over magnificent Trail Creek
summit to Mackay will bring you faceto-face
with Idaho’s highest peak, the
12,666-foot. Mount Borah. Not quite
up for ascending the mountain? Take
a self-guided tour of Mackay’s mine
hill to learn about the town’s mining
heritage or drive up to Lemhi Pass to
see where Lewis and Clark first stepped
into Idaho.
» North of Ketchum, the road rises
slowly to Galena Summit and Galena
Lodge, where you can Nordic ski on
groomed trails in winter and mountain
bike in summer. Once over the summit,
you will descend into the broad Stanley
Basin, where even more wonders await.

boating, canoeing, horseback riding,
hiking, or just sitting by a campfire in
the evening. One of the best experiences

» The mighty Salmon River—the River
of No Return—begins as just a stream
catching sunlight between the trees in
the shadow of Galena Summit. At Stanley
or Salmon, you can arrange with an
outfitter for a rafting adventure to suit
your tastes—a leisurely half-day float
or five days of wilderness rafting and
superb riverside dining. Trips launch
from Stanley and Salmon.
» Golf in central Idaho absolutely must
include the outstanding courses in
Sun Valley. Recently added to the Sun
Valley Resort golf family is the new
White Clouds course, which overlooks
a sumptuous clubhouse and 18-hole
putting course.
» Of course, when the cool fall breezes
turn brisk and snow begins to fall,
central Idaho adopts her winter posture
as America’s first destination ski resort,
offering every variety of winter fun
imaginable. Sleigh rides, ice-skating,
snowmobiling, and backcountry skiing
add to the diverse powdery offerings in
central Idaho.
