Sumerian Epic Hero Rubric
Directions:
It is the year 3,000 B.C.E. and a new, eighth Sumerian city-state, Urmrod, is on the rise and gaining power. However,
they will need a superhero to lead them to infamy. Begin by brainstorming a new, original superhero that can direct
them and their affairs. What problems would a Sumerian city-state be facing 5,000 years ago? What ‘superpowers’
could help them solve these problems?
Next, create an A3-size poster advertising your new Sumerian Superhero. In about one
week, your city will be voting on a superhero to lead them and you want to win. How can
you make your new superhero stand out?
Be sure to include:
• A picture/design of your new superhero
• Name and a tagline relating to their distinguished quality
• A written description of their physical qualities which should include:
- strengths
- weaknesses
- supernatural abilities
• Choose ONE of These Qualities of an Epic:
- has to go through a test to show worthiness
- has a quest
- travels take him/her to a far off land/ supernatural world

Ideas / Organization
• 5 Focused, clear and specific. You have included excellent detail in your poster on
two clear elements of an Epic hero, one being the physical qualities. Information
is relevant to Sumer. Your information keeps the reader’s attention.
• 3 Some really good parts, some not there yet. You have included some detail on
two or more elements of an Epic hero, though some of this may not be focused.
Most information is relevant, though some may be far-fetched. You generally
keep the reader’s attention.
• 1 Just beginning to figure out what you want to say or you may not know what to
say yet. You have not included enough Elements of an Epic Hero or much
detail. Much of your information may not be relevant to Sumer.
Word Choice
• 5 Extremely clear, visual and accurate, I chose the right words for the right places.
My words are colorful, snappy, vital, brisk and fresh. You won’t find overdone,
repetitive, or dead words or flowery language.
• 3 Correct but not striking. The words get the message across but don’t capture the
reader’s attention. I used everyday words but did not stretch much for new and
better ways to say things. My words aren’t specific. I need better details.
• 1 Confusing or unclear. The reader is often asking, ‘What did s/he mean by this?’
A lot of words and phrases are vague. Some of my words are misused and
confusing. I used the same words over and over again.
Conventions
• 5 Mostly correct. There are very few errors in my comic. Spelling is accurate;
capitals used correctly; punctuation marks are correct; grammar is consistent.
• 3 About halfway there. A number of bothersome mistakes need cleaning up. A few
simple/common mistakes have been overlooked. Problems in punctuation.
• 1 Editing is not under control yet. It would take more than one reading to get the
message. Spelling errors are common. Capital letters are scattered all over, or
not used at all. Punctuation is limited or overused and makes reading this paper
difficult. I haven’t spent time editing this paper.

of my ideas are not organized effectively. I may or may not use notes, speak
somewhat clearly and make some eye contact with the teacher. My presentation
