<strong>Sumerian</strong> Epic Hero <strong>Rubric</strong><br />

Directions:<br />

It is the year 3,000 B.C.E. and a new, eighth <strong>Sumerian</strong> city-state, Urmrod, is on the rise and gaining power. However,<br />

they will need a superhero to lead them to infamy. Begin by brainstorming a new, original superhero that can direct<br />

them and their affairs. What problems would a <strong>Sumerian</strong> city-state be facing 5,000 years ago? What ‘superpowers’<br />

could help them solve these problems?<br />

Next, create an A3-size poster advertising your new <strong>Sumerian</strong> <strong>Superhero</strong>. In about one<br />

week, your city will be voting on a superhero to lead them and you want to win. How can<br />

you make your new superhero stand out?<br />

Be sure to include:<br />

• A picture/design of your new superhero<br />

• Name and a tagline relating to their distinguished quality<br />

• A written description of their physical qualities which should include:<br />

- strengths<br />

- weaknesses<br />

- supernatural abilities<br />

• Choose ONE of These Qualities of an Epic:<br />

- has to go through a test to show worthiness<br />

- has a quest<br />

- travels take him/her to a far off land/ supernatural world<br />

Ideas / Organization<br />

• 5 Focused, clear and specific. You have included excellent detail in your poster on<br />

two clear elements of an Epic hero, one being the physical qualities. Information<br />

is relevant to Sumer. Your information keeps the reader’s attention.<br />

• 3 Some really good parts, some not there yet. You have included some detail on<br />

two or more elements of an Epic hero, though some of this may not be focused.<br />

Most information is relevant, though some may be far-fetched. You generally<br />

keep the reader’s attention.<br />

• 1 Just beginning to figure out what you want to say or you may not know what to<br />

say yet. You have not included enough Elements of an Epic Hero or much<br />

detail. Much of your information may not be relevant to Sumer.<br />

Word Choice<br />

• 5 Extremely clear, visual and accurate, I chose the right words for the right places.<br />

My words are colorful, snappy, vital, brisk and fresh. You won’t find overdone,<br />

repetitive, or dead words or flowery language.<br />

• 3 Correct but not striking. The words get the message across but don’t capture the<br />

reader’s attention. I used everyday words but did not stretch much for new and<br />

better ways to say things. My words aren’t specific. I need better details.<br />

• 1 Confusing or unclear. The reader is often asking, ‘What did s/he mean by this?’<br />

A lot of words and phrases are vague. Some of my words are misused and<br />

confusing. I used the same words over and over again.<br />

Conventions<br />

• 5 Mostly correct. There are very few errors in my comic. Spelling is accurate;<br />

capitals used correctly; punctuation marks are correct; grammar is consistent.<br />

• 3 About halfway there. A number of bothersome mistakes need cleaning up. A few<br />

simple/common mistakes have been overlooked. Problems in punctuation.<br />

• 1 Editing is not under control yet. It would take more than one reading to get the<br />

message. Spelling errors are common. Capital letters are scattered all over, or<br />

not used at all. Punctuation is limited or overused and makes reading this paper<br />

difficult. I haven’t spent time editing this paper.<br />

Presentation <strong>Rubric</strong><br />

• 5 I present my new superhero to the group clearly and in an organized manner. I<br />

use notes, speak clearly in a loud volume, and make eye contact with the<br />

audience. My presentation shows good planning and practice. I have included a<br />

good, clear, relevant visual to aide but not guide my presentation.<br />

• 3 I present my new superhero to the group in a somewhat clear manner but some<br />

of my ideas are not organized effectively. I may or may not use notes, speak<br />

somewhat clearly and make some eye contact with the teacher. My presentation<br />

shows a little planning and practice. I have included a visual but it may not be<br />

completely relevant or it may direct my presentation too much.<br />

• 1 I do not present my new superhero in a clear or organized manner. I do not use<br />

notes. I do not speak clearly or make any eye contact. I have not planned or<br />

practiced my presentation. I have not included a visual or a relevant visual in my<br />

presentation.<br />
