CLATHRUS CIBARIUS.<br />

Through the kindness of H. W. Laing, Lyttelton, New Zealand,<br />

\ve are able to present a photograph of this phalloid. Though the<br />

most common phalloid in New Zealand, this is the first published photograph<br />

made to show its size, and it will be noted from the scale that<br />

Mr. Laing has thoughtfully photographed on it, our reproduction is<br />

reduced one-half the natural size.<br />

From Mr. Laing's letter we learn the following in regard to the<br />

habits and characters of the plant.<br />

Clathrus cibarius is pure white, except of course when covered<br />

with the foetid, brownish gleba. It grew in clusters in the rank grass<br />

in moist situations, and never in the open country where the grass is<br />
