Overview
The Elang exploration project is located on the island of west
Sumbawa in Indonesia, approximately 60km from Newmont’s
Batu Hijau copper and gold mine. Exploration teams continue
to discover a copper and gold deposit, potentially expanding
production in Indonesia.
Exploration at Elang has been ongoing and recommenced in
September 2011 with the acceptance and support of local
communities; and following the issuance of an exploration permit
from the Indonesian government in 2010. Exploration drilling is
expected to continue through 2016 to allow evaluation of the
deposit’s viability for potential future development.
Community investment and engagement activities focused on
social and economic development continue across 36 villages
around the exploration area.
Community & Environmental Highlights
Community relations representatives at Elang interact and
live within the surrounding communities. The focus on
community investment remains strong and continues in the
form of infrastructure development through road construction,
community halls, mosques, clinics and vocational training
centers.
The local Lenangguar Health Center was recently expanded in
2012 to include two additional inpatient rooms. Road maintenance
and development also continue in 2012 with plans to repair and
seal approximately 13.5 km of road to provide better access from
Sumbawa Besar to the Lantung and Ropang regions.
Newmont continues to work with local residents to help them
establish and run small businesses. The company also works to
develop and maintain local business partners that supply goods
and services for both the exploration project and other community
investments.
