in Patrice Lumumba’s downfall and death. Lumumba was a name I
would well know later in my life. First-hand accounts of the Rhodesian
Security Forces capturing terrorist belongings in Zambia during
camp raids proved that Zimbabwe African Nationalist Liberation
Army (ZANLA) terrorists, or Rhodesian terrorists supported by
the Russians and operating out of Zambia, had been trained by
Russians in the Soviet Union.
A high-ranking Soviet intelligence officer who defected to the
West during the Cold War stated that Patrice Lumumba’s People’s
Friendship University was a front used by the KGB—Russian state
police and intelligence services—for training communist terrorists
from all over the world.
Rhodesians had discovered some curious items inside terrorists’
backpacks. These included an Aeroflot—Soviet airlines— flight menu,
military training notebooks and a group graduation photograph.
That photo contained an international mix of students including
two ZANLA terrorists standing between primitive cannons at a Russian
training facility. Whether or not this photo was taken at Lumumba’s
People’s Friendship University, the Russians had nevertheless named a
university after him. Why was this man so revered by the Russians?
I remember thinking as the saying goes that “One man’s terrorist is
