65 th
Annual Meeting
April 24-28, 2013
Çırağan palace Kempinski | istanbul, Turkey

Dear ABJS Members, Families, and Guests,
Istanbul’a hoşgeldiniz – Welcome to Istanbul
Napoleon Bonaparte, said, “If the earth was a
single state, Istanbul would be its capital.” Istanbul is
the only city in the world located on two continents;
Europe and Asia. And, she will become the capital of
the 2013 ABJS annual meeting after being the capital of
the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires. You will soon
stand where the tomb of Alexander the Great can be seen
at the Archeology Museum of Istanbul. Julius Caesar
and Hannibal led their forces in between these two
continents. Hannibal’s tomb is in the city of Gebze.
All your senses will soon be challenged while
standing at the waterfront: the view of the Bosphorus—
teeming with ships—from our hotel; silhouettes of the
Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, and the Maiden Tower;
the scent of Turkish coffee in the former summer palace
of the Ottoman dynasty. As life never stops in Istanbul,
you will awaken to the sounds and colors of the city.
Some of you for the first time in your life will hear the
sounds of the Turkish music and native instruments
such as the Ney, Ud, or Kanun. These instruments
once influenced Mozart to compose his famous opera,
“The Abduction from the Seraglio.” When you walk
into the streets the colors and sounds of merchants will
mix with the cries of seagulls and cats. As the colors
of the sky over the Princes’ Islands in the Marmara
Sea turn to red, the city lights will invite you for more
music and entertainment. And, if you are not a person
to sleep, walk to Ortaköy after midnight and watch
the shimmering lights of the boats and ships on the
strait. We are sure that you will soon create your own
harmony of colors and sound. Large varieties of food
will stimulate your palate and the bouquet of wine
your smell. The fragrance of the spices at the Egyptian
Bazaar will take you to a distant travel on the Silk Road.
Touching a hand-made carpet in the Grand Bazaar
will inspire you as never before. For more, rely on your
instincts and imaginations: wander the streets, turn
any corner, or take a boat to Kanlıca or Anadolukavağı;
it doesn’t matter. Istanbul will cuddle you softly
and gently.
History is a major attraction of Istanbul and
Turkey. South of the Topkapı Palace, 11 kilometers
away from the congress hotel, footsteps of humans
dating to 8,000 years ago—4000 years before written
history—were recently discovered. In the ancient harbor
of Constantinople, the harbor of Theodosius, shipwrecks
of the Egyptian felucca and long boats of the Vikings
revealed trade between early civilizations. In Göbeklitepe
near Urfa, at the northern borders of Mesopotamia, a
12,000 year-old temple—approximately 7,500 years
older than Stonehenge—was recently excavated. Who
were these pre-historical hunter-collector humans?
Why did they build temples instead of houses? How
did they worship? All unanswered questions. When
you visit Istanbul and Turkey, you will not only travel
to the past of ancient civilizations but create your own
history and leave your footprints in this distinct part of
2
the world. Imagine the others who left their footprints
in Istanbul. When you visit the Topkapı Palace, locate
the tower house of the head physician: this is where the
vaccination for chicken pox was discovered and taken to
London by Lady Montagu, the wife to the Ambassador
of England, in the late 18th century. During your visit to
the Dolmabahçe Palace Museum, next to our hotel, you
will recognize several clocks in almost all of the rooms;
there is even a separate building where the clocks of the
museum are displayed. Did you know that Mr. Isaac
Rousseau, father of the famous philosopher Jean-Jacques
Rousseau, was in charge of these clocks? We leave the rest
to you to discover when you are here.
We have prepared stimulating social and cultural
events for you. Those who choose to come a few days
earlier may enjoy golfing in Antalya. Another option is
to participate in the Pamukkale (Hierapolis), Ephesus
and Pergamum pre- and/or post-congress tours which
will lead you to the West coast of Turkey. The protector
of the city of Ephesus was Artemis, the Goddess whose
temple was one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World,” and the Asclepion of Pergamum was the
therapy center of Galen, a pioneer of modern medical
science. After the congress you may discover central
Anatolia including Cappadocia—the land of horses. To
escape persecution, early Christians built their houses,
workshops, and churches in caves in Cappadocia.
Some of these houses are now converted into boutique
hotels for your delight. A hot air balloon ride over the
spectacular volcanic chimneys is a once-in-a-lifetime
experience. Or enjoy Mavi Yolculuk (blue voyage) on a
gullet from the lovely coastal town of Bodrum. Gulleting
in Bodrum means switching off your computers and
mobile phones for a while. Sleeping in the open air
under the moon and stars on a boat in untouched bays
is marvelous; we call it re-creation. Take the morning
ferry to visit Hippocrates’ Asclepion on the island of Cos,
visible from the hills above Bodrum. Wander through
the perfectly preserved crusader castle of St. Peter. For
all these attractions and beyond, please come to Istanbul
and Turkey. As Mevlana Jelaledin Rumi, the 13th century
Turkish humanist, philosopher and poet once said:
Come; “ …come, whoever you are:
… a wanderer, an idolater, a worshipper of fire.
Come even though you have broken your vows a
thousand times;
…come, and come yet again.
The way of ours is not a court of despair.
If you have a smile on your face on the way back ” home,
and if you have already planned to visit us again, we will
have accomplished our tasks.
Until we meet in April, Hoşçakalın!
Şükran and O. Şahap ATİK, and
Petek, Ata, and Feza KORKUSUZ
9:00-10:30 AM
Ebru Yilmaz is an architect and artist whose works explore the intersections between contemporary versus traditional
art, with a specific interest towards inspiring the past and utilizing it in her own interpretation of what is meant as
“art” today. While practicing her art in sculpture, custom-designed metal works, furniture and jewelry, her research
on traditional art techniques in Turkish history raised her interest towards “ebru technique” (which her first name was
given after). Ebru is the art of “painting on water” and is defined as the “marbling art”. This unique technique has the
artist performing on condensed water with hand-made natural paints and brushes, and then transferring this “image”
to a sheet of paper or other framework. Ebru Yilmaz gave her heart to this art form and she continues to explore more
and more within the limits of the marbling technique. Ebru Yilmaz is the sister of Petek Korkusuz, Local Host, and has
Wine Tasting
1:00-6:00 PM / €99 per person
Guests will drive to the Old Town to Nar Restaurant
to take a step into the world of ancient times, all the
way to the Bronze Age, 4,500 years ago, to discover the
extraordinary aromas of wine which are produced in
Anatolia. Turkey is the fourth largest producer of grapes
in the world. The country is divided into 5 regions for
wine production; Marmara Region, Aegean Region,
Pamukkale Region, Central Anatolia, and Eastern
Turkey. There are more than 1500 named grape varieties
of which 600-800 are genetically different. Turkish
winemaking employs a mixture of traditional, local
grapes and modern, imported varieties. The increasingly
global red wine portfolio of Pinot Noir, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah is present, as is its white
wine equivalent consisting of Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc and Semillon. The rustic southern French duo of
Cinsaut and Grenache is also used in various Turkish
wine regions, as is the Grenache-Petit Bouschet crossing
of Alicante Bouschet. Cinsaut is often blended with
the local grape Papazkarasi. Some of the native Turkish
varieties include the Yapincak and Papazkarasi grown
in Thrace, the Sultaniye of the Aegean coast, and the
Okuzgozu and Bogazkere (used to make Buzbag) of
Eastern Anatolia.
At the restaurant, guests will have a one-hour seminar
Hellenistic & Roman Istanbul
1:00-6:00 PM / €40 per person
Depart from the hotel to Istanbul Archaeology Museum.
Housing over one million objects that represent almost
all of the eras and civilizations in world history, the
Archaeology Museum consists of three museums:
Archaeology Museum, Old Eastern Works Museum,
and Enameled Kiosk Museum. Besides its importance as
the “first Turkish museum”, it has the importance and
specialty of being one of the first buildings in the world
to be constructed as a Museum. Established as Müze-i
Humayun (Empire Museum) by the famous artist and
museum director Osman Hamdi Bey at the end of the
19th century, the museum opened to the public on June
13, 1891. Today, it still maintains its outstanding place
in the world’s biggest museums with its works, more
than a million, belonging to various cultures. In the
museum collections there are rich and very important
works of art belonging to various civilizations from
the regions: from Balkans to Africa, from Anatolia and
Mesopotamia to Arab Peninsula and Afghanistan, that
were in the borders of the Ottoman Empire.
Finally, visit Pierre Loti, the popular cafe overlooking
the Golden Horn in the Eyüp area, which was dedicated
to writer Pierre Loti. “Pierre Loti” was actually a
pseudonym. His real name was Louis Marie-Julien,
Viaud, a French sailor and writer.
Christianity & Islam Mingles
1:00-6:00 PM / €35 per person
Depart from the hotel to visit the most beautiful
and splendid of all the imperial mosques in Istanbul,
Suleymaniye, the mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent.
Built between the years 1550-1557 by Sinan, the
greatest of all Ottoman architects, Suleymaniye Mosque
was built with the wish to surpass the builders of St.
Sophia. Like other works of that time, Suleymaniye is
not only a mosque but also a huge complex. It is an
edifice which typifies the Ottoman Empire at its peak.
The magnificence of the mosque, clearly reflected in its
architecture, also prevails in the interior of the fine portal
gates, carved marble mihrab and minber, and even the
carpets, chandeliers and bronze candlesticks.

Continue to visit Kariye Museum. Kariye is the Turkish
adaptation of the ancient Greek word “chora” which
refers to “countryside”. The church was built in the 4 th
century during the Byzantine days, then outside the
city walls. First converted into a mosque during the 16 th
century, it was finally made a museum in 1948, leaving
no Islamic element in the building except the minaret.
The walls are decorated with superb 14 th century frescoes,
and mosaics on a gold ground.
Ottoman Visions (also offered on Friday, April 26)
1:00-6:00 PM / €45 per person
Drive to the center of the Old Town, Sultan Ahmet
Square, and visit Blue Mosque. The mosque was built
in early 17th century and known as “blue” because of
its magnificent interior decoration with blue Iznik tiles,
which are striking both for their color and the immense
area over which they are displayed. It is the only mosque
in the world that was originally built with six minarets.
The 260 windows floodlight the interior of the mosque
which is covered by a dome 23.5m (73 ft.) in diameter
and 43m (141 ft.) high. The architect Mehmet Aga
was a student of Sinan, the greatest architect of classical
Ottoman architecture.
Continue to Topkapi Palace, built by Sultan Mehmet
II after the conquest of Istanbul in the 15th century.
The palace housed the 25 Ottoman Sultans and their
exotic entourage until mid-19th century. In 1924 it was
opening onto one another with monumental gates.
The courtyards are surrounded by functional buildings.
Şafak Pavey is known for her
international work in the field
of human rights, humanitarian
aid and peace-building, with a
background embracing diplomacy,
activism and journalism. Ms.
Pavey was the first disabled woman
elected to Turkish Parliament. She has demonstrated
great personal dignity in overcoming physical obstacles
every day, while locally and globally championing the
rights of vulnerable populations, including refugees
and disabled persons. Whether working in extreme
conditions for the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR) in the Middle East, South Asia
and Africa, or acting as a lightning rod to spark the UN
Human Rights Convention on the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities, Ms. Pavey has sought to turn her
disability into strength on a global level. After winning a
seat in the Turkish Parliament in June 2011, Ms. Pavey is
continuing her struggle for human rights, giving voice to
invisible people; disabled persons, women, children and
minority populations in Turkey. To date, Şafak Pavey has
published three books. Her latest book Nereye Gidersem
Gokyuzu Benimdir (Wherever I Go the Sky is Mine),
consists of her recollections of social life and a witness
account of social freedoms in Iran where she lived for
some years. Ms. Pavey is also the managerial editor of a
legal book Refugee Rights in Iran that she published with
2003 Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi. Ms. Pavey was
the first Turkish columnist of the bilingual Armenian-
Turkish Agos Newspaper where she wrote for many
years. In addition to numerous other honors, Ms. Pavey
was most recently awarded the “Outstanding Young
Person of the World Award” by Junior Chamber
International and the “International Women of Courage
Award” from First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Ms. Pavey
has been elected by member States as an international
independent human rights expert to serve on the UN
Human Rights Committee for the rights of persons with
disabilities for a 4-year term, starting in January 2013.
Byzantine Visions
1:00-6:00 PM / €40 per person
Drive to the center of the Old Town and visit
Hippodrome Square, the scene of chariot races and the
center of Byzantine civic life. It was built by Roman
Emperor Septimus in 203 AD with the capacity of
100,000 spectators, which was one quarter of the city
population of those days. The original ground level of
the Hippodrome was 4-5 meters lower than the present
surface. View three monuments: the Egyptian Obelisk,
the Serpent Column, and Walled Obelisk.
The Egyptian Obelisk is the oldest monument in the
city. Around 1490 BC, Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose
III erected two obelisks which were made of rare pink
granite. In the 4th century AD, a Roman Emperor
brought one of the obelisks to Istanbul. In 390 AD,
during the reign of Emperor Theodosius, the obelisk
was erected with great difficulty at Hippodrome Square.
Today, it is around 26 meters long. The Serpent Column
is also one of the oldest monuments in the city. The
heads of three intertwined serpents are used to form the
legs of a gold cauldron.
Continue to St. Sophia Museum (church), built in 360
AD. St. Sophia was, for many centuries, the world’s
largest church. Through its Byzantine history, it served
as the cathedral of the city and after his conquest of
Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet II converted it to a mosque by
adding Islamic elements such as minarets, mihrab, and
minber.
Then, visit Basilica Cistern (Underground Cistern), built
for wartime in 542 AD by Byzantine Emperor Justinian
for water storage. There are 336 columns most of which
are topped with Byzantian Corinthian capitals. The
cistern is 70m (230 ft.) wide and 140m (460 ft.) long.
It is the largest and most magnificent covered cistern in
the city. The name of the cistern comes from a basilica
that was once located nearby. The ground of the cistern
was cleared during the major restoration in 1987, and
after the removal of 1 meter of mud, the original brick
pavement and two marble Medusa heads at the base of
two of the columns were revealed.

which are striking both for their color and the immense
area over which they are displayed. It is the only mosque
The 260 windows floodlight the interior of the mosque
which is covered by a dome 23.5m (73 ft.) in diameter
professional staff of the bath called “TELLAK”.
This special cleaning session is followed by a
fresh up massage. At the end of the treatment
guests will receive their new soft towels and be
taken to the reception area to get refreshed.
Although special fabric called “pestemal” is provided
bring their own swimming suits.
Art of Weaving
handmade carpets. Guests will have a chance to
Sultan’s Summer Palace
1:00-6:00 PM / €50 per person
Depart to the royal residence of Ottoman
Sultans, the sumptuous Dolmabahce Palace.
During the 19th century, westernization of the
Ottoman Empire, which became an important
trend, was also felt in the architecture of the
time. Dolmabahce Palace was built under
such an influence between 1843 and 1856 by
Sultan Abdulmecit. The site of the palace was
obtained by filling a small bay on the Bosphorus,
thus giving the palace its name which means
“filled garden.” Its interior decoration is famed
for a great collection of European antiques,
its furniture, and a Turkish bath in alabaster.
Covering an area of 25 hectares, the palace
consists of 285 rooms and 46 halls among
which figures a large reception hall supported
by 56 columns, and a chandelier that weighs
4.5 tons. Approximately 600 paintings adorn
the walls, and specially woven, very beautiful,
Hereke carpets of huge dimensions cover the
palace floors.
Continue to visit the Galata Tower which was
built by the Genoese colony as part of their
town defense fortifications in the 14th century.
In Genoese sources it was named Christea Turris
(Tower of Christ). It was altered considerably,
particularly by the addition of the upper parts
under the Ottomans during the course of the
centuries. It was used at different times as a
prison and a watch tower for fires. In 1967, the
tower was restored and an elevator was added.
The present height of the tower is 63m/ 206 ft.
Today, two top floors serve as a restaurant with

folkloric shows. During the daytime it is open to
visitors for panoramic views of the region. In the
17 th century, during the reign of the Ottoman
Sultan Murat IV, Hazerfen Ahmet Celebi, a
scholar whose first name means “a thousand
sciences”, managed to fly by wearing rush-work
wings, from the top of the Galata Tower to
Uskudar, an Asian settlement opposite and across
the Bosphorous. An excited crowd including
the sultan watched him achieve this feat. Sultan
Murat admired Hezarfen but he was also afraid
that his unusual ability would win him excessive
power. The Sultan gave him a purse of gold and
declared: “This man is one to be feared. He can
do anything he wishes. The presence of such
men is not auspicious.” Hazerfen was then
exiled to Algeria where he died broken hearted
far from home.
Two Continents
1:00-6:00 PM / €35 per person
Drive to the Asian Side of Istanbul via the
transcontinental Bosphorus Bridge, unique in
the world connecting the continents of Asia and
Europe. The bridge was built in 1973, the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. Its length
is 1.560m (1,074m over the sea) and height from
the sea is 64m. It is the fourth longest suspension
bridge in the world.
Visit Beylerbeyi Palace, situated on the shore
at the Asian end of the Bosphorus Bridge
and built between 1861 and 1864 by Sultan
Abdulaziz. The palace is a three-story structure
set on terraced grounds planted with trees
brought from around the world. The interior
was decorated in a style typical of 19 th century
Europe. The original furniture is still on display.
The building itself, constructed in the French
Baroque style, is made of stone and marble. It
was used by the Ottoman sultans as a summer
residence. Conclude the tour with a drive to
Camlica Hill, the highest hill in Istanbul, to
enjoy the panoramic view of the city.
