Part 2: The Basics of Operation
If the boat has been attached to shore electrical power to recharge batteries or to operate
accessories, make sure the power cord is disconnected and stowed. The dock fenders—
plastic bumpers you hang over the side of your boat—can also be put away at this time.
Normally, you simply cast off the dock lines and put the boat into gear to leave the dock.
But sometimes it can be more complicated—see Chapter 6, “The Art and Science of
Docking,” for details.
Keeping Trim Afloat
The trim system on a stern drive or outboard controls the angle of attack of the prop to
the water and also affects the running angle of the boat. Small motors have manual trim,
adjustable only when the engine is stopped by moving a pin on the mounting bracket to
shift the lower unit in or out relative to the transom.
But most motors larger than 50 horsepower have power trim, an electrical/hydraulic system
controlled most often by a rocker switch on the throttle lever or sometimes by a separate
rocker switch on the dash. You push the button to activate a pump in the hydraulic
tube, causing the lower unit to tilt in or out relative to the transom.
Trimming the motor closer
to the transom forces the bow
down, while trimming it
away from the transom
pushes the bow up.
Trim up
Push the bottom of the trim button when you want to take off or begin planing. This
tilts the bottom of the lower unit closer to the transom. Most lower units will trim to a
